OT:Anyone tell me a bit about Ocarinas?

I dont know all the music lingo here but can I play a song meant for an ocarina on my whistle? The tab its written with four dots in a circle. My son is dying to play the Ocarina music from Zelda and I found a site with all the songs written in tab and I am not sure how to make this work for a whistle. Any help here would be great. If it cant be transposed, if that is the right word here, then I might just have to get an ocarina and try one out.

Personal opinion: it is easier to learn to read proper music than to translate ocarina tab into whistle tab.

Is the Zelda tune written in letter notation along with ocarina fingering? Can you listen to it, note for note and figure it out by ear? Or link us to a place where its played and maybe one of us could tackle it.

I’m certainly not an ocarina master, but I have owned several. I’ve discovered that playing by ear is a lot easier on the oc than actually trying to read the tab. Going from oc to whistle isn’t that difficult - just takes a little time. The main thing is fun, right?

If you want to hear some good ocarina music check out Eric Tingstad & Nancy Rumbel. Incredible.

Since karina takes tabs, here’s the prescription gathered from http://www.clayz.com/

To transpose to whistle, use the first line:
do re mi fa so la ti do’
but play
D E F# G A B C# d

As for the accidentals (2nd tab line)
do# re# fa# so# la#
read instead:
Eb Fnat G# Bb Cnat

I havent found this music anywhere to listen to except the games and the one song on the site. Remember this is not for me but my 10yo son so if I could switch over to tab for him it would be easier for him as he cant read music. Here is the site with the tab for the songs they look really easy I just dont know what holes are what notes on the oc.
here is the site if someone would take a look.

A conversion chart: ocarina tablature to whistle tablature. The x’s are the same as the filled circles. The left represents the mouthpiece end of the whistle.

Yes, great music. I was just listening to their music a couple of days ago. It’s available to listen to on their site. They won a Grammy this year.

Perfect…Thank you Walden this is just what I wanted for him..Thanks to all who helped and I will check out this Ocarina music a little more myself…Cece

IMHO Oc tab should be banned. All my children learned Oc at around four and it helped them not one bit towards redorker or anything else musical whatsoever.

My English Ocs are all six or more holed (bass, tenor, alto, soprano, duet)…I’ve never seen other than the cheap plastic ones here with four holes.

You can find a great deal of info on Ocarinas and tabulature at Yahoo Ocarinaclub in the “Files” area. You will have to join(it’s free)to access this area though.

Same can be said of most any tablature, whether guitar or anything, but it enables people, who haven’t yet spent many hours in theory class, to play something quickly. About the only thing tabs of this sort can give one experience toward, is playing by ear.

Ocarinas are a lot of fun once you get the hang of the fingering. Susato ( I thin) makes some very inexpensive plastic ones that hang from a neck cord so you can wear a nifty musical instrument and play tunes anywhere, anytime.
