As a newbie whistler ( going on three and a half months now … mostly a lurker ), I’ve naturally turned to chiff & fipple from time to time for advice and knowledge. Having had sort of a revelation of sorts the other day I thought I’d share it with the community. As a newbie I have been listening to a ton of irish music and the perceived sp? tempo of all the songs seemed much faster than their actual tempos. Now… I can handle fast coming from a bluegrass background
, but as I listened more and more I realized I had been making a big mistake. No doubt a good player in any musical tradition can make fast sound deceptively easy… I knew this… this irish music thing was something else. Eureka! It was the unique brand of irish ornamentation that actually to my ears increases not only the perceived tempo of the song, but alsa rounded it out and made it fuller. Just wanted to say in so many words - Ornamentation Rox! BluegrassBoy ![]()
Welcome, BgBoy. Ornamentation is a wonderful thing, like you said. Just be sure to get the rhythm steady and identifiable or the ornamentation will be a lot of clutter. At it’s best, it’s a great compliment to good rhythm. Have fun,
Tony
Yes, it’s something that absorbs one forever.
As mentioned above, often less is more.
Yes it is a lot like 5 string in that regard. Most new guitar players play accompaniment to the 5 string twice as fast as it should be. It is very similar. BTW I am still struggling with the ornamentation. It is not easy for me to see how to work it out. There are some whistle tunes that are almost the opposite. They sound slow so I feel like I can keep up with it. Then when I try it is much faster than I perceived it to be. Keep whistling.
