So, I’ve seen a number of flutes around with engraved silver rings. For instance, Chris Norman’s Rod Cameron flute. The Doyle flutes, and the Hornpipes now being made in my own hometown, or thereabouts.
So my question is, where do I source them, I am having an Olwell made and wanted to get some engraved rings.
All I’ve come up with on my own is bagpipesilver in the US
Up to size 15 (that’s whats on my M&E foot) you can get regular silver rings w/ many different “Celtic” motifs (got mine at East Durham as well as a new wedding ring)
How about Walker Metalsmiths (http://www.celtarts.com/silvrngs.htm)? They do make cylindrical silver rings with Celtic designs in larger sizes and I’ve wondered if those could be adapted…
This might be a weird idea, but perhaps you have a jeweler in town who could do this for you. Not someone like a chain store, but an actual gold/silversmith. You could get the specifications from Olwell and give them to the jeweler who can then make the rings with the pattern in the size you want. Then you could send them to Olwell to use with the flute.
Nice design ideas, thanks! I am tooling up to cast my own rings, using lost wax casting, so I was thinking of making some rings like this… (Maybe in a few years, so maybe they will be ready for your flute)
With all the other silver Jon? Sounds awesome, probably a lot of work!
I’m not really looking for the Wilkes style machined rings, I’m thinking celtic knot type thing. And Rudalls aren’t really my thing though I’ll be trying a Byrne so we’ll see what that’s like.
Aside from which, I think Mr Wilkes’ list is even longer than Mr Olwell’s!
I’ve made rings for my flute that Casey made me, and I’ve still got the molds for them. I’m a custom jeweler, and would be glad to talk to you about rings for your flute. Some of my celtic rings can be seen at:http://www.jonesandjonesjewelers.com/celtic/index.htm
I have a picture of the flute, but I don’t know how to post the picture.
