Ornamental Silver rings for flutes

So, I’ve seen a number of flutes around with engraved silver rings. For instance, Chris Norman’s Rod Cameron flute. The Doyle flutes, and the Hornpipes now being made in my own hometown, or thereabouts.

So my question is, where do I source them, I am having an Olwell made and wanted to get some engraved rings.

All I’ve come up with on my own is bagpipesilver in the US

Wow, 50 views and no ideas yet, this must be some kind of out there idea…

Talk to Jon C. As far as I know it is just really thick, ornamented wire. Michael’s or some other craft store?

Up to size 15 (that’s whats on my M&E foot) you can get regular silver rings w/ many different “Celtic” motifs (got mine at East Durham as well as a new wedding ring)

Still looking for a source of bigger ones though…

So you had actual jewellery put on your flute, must admit I didn’t consider that/

Who knows Mr. Olwell may also have some ideas!

How about Walker Metalsmiths (http://www.celtarts.com/silvrngs.htm)? They do make cylindrical silver rings with Celtic designs in larger sizes and I’ve wondered if those could be adapted…

WOW ! What a hit…dead on ! Thanks !

They go to 26 1/4…big enough for most all flutes…

EDIT: Maby I jump too soon…no silver in the big sizes… :sniffle:

This might be a weird idea, but perhaps you have a jeweler in town who could do this for you. Not someone like a chain store, but an actual gold/silversmith. You could get the specifications from Olwell and give them to the jeweler who can then make the rings with the pattern in the size you want. Then you could send them to Olwell to use with the flute.

Nice design ideas, thanks! I am tooling up to cast my own rings, using lost wax casting, so I was thinking of making some rings like this… (Maybe in a few years, so maybe they will be ready for your flute)

Bin the Olwell and put in an order with Chris Wilkes, ye’ll get some great rings :astonished:

With all the other silver Jon? Sounds awesome, probably a lot of work!

I’m not really looking for the Wilkes style machined rings, I’m thinking celtic knot type thing. And Rudalls aren’t really my thing though I’ll be trying a Byrne so we’ll see what that’s like.

Aside from which, I think Mr Wilkes’ list is even longer than Mr Olwell’s!

I’ve made rings for my flute that Casey made me, and I’ve still got the molds for them. I’m a custom jeweler, and would be glad to talk to you about rings for your flute. Some of my celtic rings can be seen at:http://www.jonesandjonesjewelers.com/celtic/index.htm

I have a picture of the flute, but I don’t know how to post the picture.

I was just going to mention you!

Talking to the maker would be my first choice, as well.

I do this all the time…

What makes you say that? I didn’t see anything to indicate they were no longer silver in the larger sizes…
