Hi All,
I’m considering a Sweet Onyx low D. Have owned and played others but due to nerve issues I can no longer deal with the pipers grip or larger holed instruments. Just bought a tuneable Dixon low D to try and have had to return it.
Hoping that the off-set lower holes on the Onyx will be a good solution to my fingering problem.
Any opinions or experience with the Onyx? I have read most of the reviews of the Onyx and don’t mind at all the flute-like tone.
Thanks…JD
The Onyx low D is by far my favorite of all the low whistles I have tried. The offset holes make it much easier to play for someone with small hands and a short reach like mine
I never could get used to the piper’s grip, but with the Onyx I find it possible to play without piper’s grip easily and comfortably even for long periods of time. It is a beautiful instrument, very sleek and smooth. The whistle is in three pieces, which make it very portable and easy to fit in a bag for travel. The flute-y tone is rich and full and gorgeous. This whistle is a must-have and is well worth the money.
I think the tone sounds great (based on the recordings I’ve heard). You may be interested in a used one here:

I don’t have an Onyx, but I have a Sweet Resonance low D which I love. I’ve owned several low D whistles and my wife couldn’t finger any of them until the Resonance came along, FWIW. I’m thinking the fingering on the Onyx ought to be similar. I finger mine with regular fingering, not piper’s grip and I’m a small guy with not too large hands.
Thanks all!
That’s what I needed to know. Definitely going to get one.
Made an offer on the used one, but his asking price is more than a new one in the US so we’ll see.
Unfortunately everyone seems to be backordered at the moment.
Thanks again for the advice!
