On the local (Denver) TV news world financial update this morning, it was reported that the UK is downsizing the pint after 300 years?@%#$#&*! 
Geez, and the US was just getting adjusted to the Imperial pint. (Am I correct in assuming the downsizing is from the imperial pint, 20 oz, to the standard pint, 16 oz?)
Of course this kind of thing happens all the time. I remember, around 25 years ago, ordering a small pizza, the standard pizza sizes at that time being small 12" , medium 16" and large 20" (30, 40, and 50 cm). I was told, “We don’t sell small any more.” They sold me a medium, which was 12", and offered large and extra large, which happened to be 16" and 20". I think cut them into more slices, too, as many people ask how many slices in a particular size rather than the diameter, so the 12" small pizza with six slices became a 12" medium with 8 slices, etc.
Steady on, old chap. That’s the kind of “reporting” we get from the Daily Mail. 
A Government Review has proposed that we adopt “schooner” measures in addition to the measures we already have.
Nobody is getting rid of the pint. No legislation has been passed yet, but it looks likely. Watch out for publicans complaining that they face ruin because of the need to buy new glasses.
Couldn’t a good diamond saw just cut the tops off and make them shorter?

Just gives the consumer more choice. Enables people to have 2/3rds of a pint, especially for stronger ales. Beer is already sold in 1/3rds at beer festivals. I don’t think you’ll ever get away with banning the pint. There’d be too much outcry. Beer used to be sold in quarts (2 pints). Personally I’d like to see them reinstated, especially for weaker session ales.
Products shrink, prices don’t. One pound products are getting harder to find.

Wow, a “schooner” is 2/3 pint (or about the same size as an American 12 oz bottle)? Around here, if you order a schooner, it is about a liter in a schooner-shaped vessel. Not unlike ordering a yard or a meter, both ~quart-liter sizes in VERY tall glasses. All are somewhat awkward to drink from.
On the positive side, my concept of “single serving” size keeps getting bigger and bigger.

I was at a restaurant not long ago where ordering a meter of beer got you a meter long tray full of pint glasses.
It was just me and a friend having lunch so we decided that might be overkill.

Now wait a sec! There’s no rigging in sight and you could a a junk rigged schooner, I prefer that possibility 'cause that means ya need a snotter to tension the sprit and I like to say “snotter tensioned sprit” for some reason.
The pint is the perfect measurement of real ale. I grew up metric, but was happily converted to imperial by the pint when I moved to the UK a hundred years ago or so. Back then in the 1980s you could still shock people by being female & drinking pints. Ah, those were the days.
This will no doubt be presented as either a public-health measure or a blow for freedom. But we all know that it’s just a way of helping publicans to restore their profit margins in hard times.
