OK...this has got to be my weirdest whistle dream to date!

It started out nicely enough…I was out shopping and came across a music store I’d never seen before. Naturally, I popped in, and was delighted to see that they had a HUGE selection of whistles, including several I’d never seen before and a couple I’d been hoping to try. On the counter was a display of particularly intriguing ones…they appeared to be made out of some sort of dried cactus. I picked one up, and was startled to see that it didn’t have tone holes…only little dimples where the holes should be (I also, for some reason, noticed the price tag…$48, which was a bit more than I wanted to spend on a whim, so I knew I wasn’t going to buy it). Intrigued, I pushed lightly on one of the dimples and it crumpled inward, revealing a tone hole. I thought that was really cool, at first (for some reason), but was immediately horrified to see blood (or what appeared to be blood) come gushing out of the newly made hole. I turned to the clerk (a snooty looking woman who was totally ignoring me), meaning to apologize for damaging (“injuring”?) the whistle, but then it started to behave even more oddly…the other dimples began to crumple and bleed, and the first one I’d opened bulged with what appeared to be raw tissue. Worse, the thing started to writhe as if in agony…the sides became soft, and started to expand and contract as if it were breathing. Horrified, I caught the attention of another clerk (a man this time) and attempted to draw his attention to what was happening, but he just smiled and said “yes, that’s an unusual one, isn’t it?” I finally dropped the thing and fled (thus waking up) when I realized that some of the oozing blood and tissue was sticking to my fingers.

That’s got to be one of the weirdest dreams I’ve ever had…whistle-related or otherwise! I can understand why I’d dream about a music shop, as we had been planning to go up to San Francisco today and I was looking forward to visiting Lark in the Morning (which I’ve never been to)…our plans changed because my husband is having back trouble. But the rest of it just came out of left field. Too strange!

Redwolf

OK, Redwolf, have you been doing some dire tweaking lately?

 Nope…kinda sounds like it though, doesn’t it? I can tell you now though, if I ever actually see a whistle or flute made out of dried cactus, I’m going to run screaming in the opposite direction!

Naw…it was like the furniture I’ve sometimes seen made from cactus (cholla, I think)…like a very lightweight, tan, dried wood, but with dimples where the spines used to be. Six of those “dimples” were larger than the others and were placed where the tone holes would normally be.

Redwolf

Cholla whistles! Hmmm… puts on Johnny Carson-esque seer’s turban, rolls eyeballs up into sockets, interlaces fingers and twiddles thumbs

Your dream tells us two things: 1)Your playing is showing new life where you assumed you were at a dead end, although uncertainty on your part has you fearing botch-ups and offended listeners. Now is the time to forge ahead, however. You are at a crossroads.

  1. You ate or drank something really funky before you went to bed.

The Mysterious N

That was a dream? I thought Lark in the Morning specialised in those little critters.

Indeed. That would be the Cholla Weasel, pictured just below the meditation balls and singing haggis rainsticks.

I just finished reading Sylvia Browne’s Book of Dreams…and while it’s not a dream dictionary, I really reccomend it if you’re into that sort of thing…types of dreams, etc. It has a few excersizes you can do and…is just a good book. I’m getting ready to read it again.

Hmmm…maybe I can blame it on a couple of things:

  1. The proposed trip to Lark
  2. The recent discussion here about cracking wooden whistles, which had me obsessively checking on my Busman, and
  3. The fact that I had the questionable taste last night to combine an Australian Shiraz with felafel

Redwolf

Wow, now that is one of the strangest dreams I’ve ever heard of!

It was one really strange dream after another last night, but that was the only one that had a whistle in it. Really vivid dreams too. Ah well…at least they’re amusing! Sometimes I just shake my head when I wake up and say “where in the heck did THAT come from!!”

Redwolf

If that was Australian felafel, your taste was impeccable. But if it wasn’t, what were you expecting? :stuck_out_tongue:

That dream is like something out of the film “Invasion of the Whistle Snatchers”

My favourite bit is the almost deadpan reaction of the shop assistant. That bumps it from freaky to scary!

This is, like, so amazing. The exact thing happened to my Generation the first time I tried a tweak.

Poor Redwolf! What a dream!
