Never snack out on channa masala just before bedtime…
I had a bad flute-dream last night. I had just received a new flute, and it was wonderful: all the keys were exactly in the right places for my funny grip, it was lightweight, easy to play, and it sounded fantastic. As dream-me was putting the headjoint and (fully keyed) footjoint back in the box, I glanced at the center section and saw that it had suddenly taken on the same curve as your average banana. Horrors! I snatched it up, dreamily, and immediately grokked that the moisture in the bore had made the wood go all wibbly, like a Gummi-flute. “But it’s cocus!,” thought dream-me, aghast. I squinted hard at the grain, my trained eye perceiving the telltales of cocus, and yet the flute was shockingly, hideously…bendy! AAAARGH!!!
Indian food aside, I believe I’m being haunted by the ghost of the fish-roll shakuhachi. Anyone else ever have bad flute-dream?
Sigmund Freud: "Sometimes a flute shaped like
a banana is just a flute shaped like a banana.’
From ‘Critique of Pure Drool,’. Auslang University Press,
1923, p. 887.
I should point out, going back to the dream, that the worst part wasn’t the banana-esque curvature of the dream-flute, but the feeling of the bore collapsing between my fingers. Aside from the fish-roll, the other possible source of nightmare-fodder involving bore constriction was a conversation I had with Pat Olwell regarding thin-walled antique flute tenons and over-tight applications of stretchy thread, with predictable results. Not that I want to discuss that in this thread (no smart remarks now), but isn’t it funny how bits of real life get twisted in the dream-world?
THIS IS CRAZY!! I love to cook indian food. You should sample my masoor daal. I have this dream all the time that my flute goes limp. I pick it up and it just flops like those clocks in a Dali painting. I swear this is true! The funny thing is, is that in my dreams, I can still play the floppy flute.
