American tunes have Sally in the Garden. She’s either sifting sand (whatever that means) or Assisting Sam. Tommy Jarrell sings the following words in the tune/song Sally Ann.
Sally’s in the garden siftin’ sand
Susie’s in bed with a hog-eye man.
I’m a’goin home with Sally Ann (x2)
The tune Sally in the Garden seems unrelated to any Irish Sally Garden and is either in Am or Dm.
I enjoy the Off topic threads as much as I enjoy the On topic threads.
Hum, well I guess that’s all I have to say… I really wanted to be philosophic about it - or at the very least poetic - but it appears that that’s all there is today.

I never bought that moon phase business as an excuse for berserkness.. .
First I would like to comment on this thread instead of the two quotes above. I like this board. It doesn’t make me leary of posting. I am accepted as a beginner, well mostly. I did get a couple of strange emails, but I just went beyond them.
It is nice that the discussion isn’t limited to whistles. I have enjoyed getting to know, in a limited way, ny fellow whistlers.
As for the full moon causing aberrant behavior it has always been folklore. I don’t know if there have been any official studies, but teachers, and nurses have told me that they have noticed an increase in anything odd during a full moon.
I suppose there could be a scientific explanation for it, but maybe we just need something to blame bad behavior on. God forbid if we all took responsibility for all of our actions.

Yep, I suspect much of the OT/Relevant cycle actually has to do with the fact that occasionally people just get a bit bored with tweaking fipple blades and the ABC’s to “Down by the Sally Gardens.” Chaos reigns for a while among people who maybe don’t feel like serious whistle discussion for the moment, but enjoy each other’s company and so just make up wierd things to talk about. OK.
Before long, though, the cycle comes around again and we’ll be serious again. I personally enjoy both phases. And there’s always a little of both going on.
But I still think the moon phase has something to do with it, too…

p.s. By the way, what exactly IS a Sally Garden? Whatever it is, that tune is down by them.
what is Sally Garden? I find the info that Sally Garden relates to Willow VERY interesting.
There is an old mountain tune that the old guys played called" Down in the Willow Garden". My brother knows the words, I don’t, but I seem to remember it as one of the many where the girl is either dead or gets killed.The tune is so similar I can only play Sally Garden if I play it first. If I play Willow Garden first I either can’t think how Sally Garden goes or start it right and end up playing Willow Garden. Makes me think they are probably the same tune. The one I know is just the version that was handed down. Hummmm

Someone who sifts sand is a prostitute,
I believe–the sand is men.
All day, all night, Mary Ann,
Down by the sea side sifting sand…
is another sifting sand number.
Salley Gardens comes from the Yeats
poem ‘Down by the Salley Gardens,’
which goes:
Down by the Salley Gardens my love and
I did meet;
She passed the Salley Gardens with little
snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaf grows
on the tree;
But I being young and foolish, with her
did not agree.
In a field by the river my love and I
did stand;
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her
snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass
grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now
am full of tears.
