-Enumclaw in native language means strong wind/thundering mountain, a reference to east winds which pour downhill with great force here onto the plain from out of the Cascades, sometimes doing great damage at 60-100 mph. Similar winds occur frequently in British Columbia coastal waters where they are known as “williwaw”. They are frightening if you are on the water when one hits, and provide an instant lesson in reducing sail if a sailor hasn’t been prudent enough to do it first. They can hit as suddenly as a line squall, fine one minute, then chaos the next.
