Click on the picture of curly boxwood flutes. A window will open. In that window, in the second picture of flutes, this is the first flute.
Not for sale anymore. After getting it back from Patrick Jones, I have spent more time with it and it is simply lovely. I am going to keep it, play it and love it. Thanks, Patrick, for picking one and choosing the other for me. Perhaps I couldn’t handle having two (who, me?).
In playing these two flutes did you notice any improvement in the higher notes, ease of reaching or tonal quality etc. that the two vent holes may have brought.
The theory in Boehm flutes is that adding length to a flute helps with the higher notes. So even though lowB is rarely used in flute music having the lowB footjopint is supposed to help, Galway supports this concept.
I have spent some serious time with both of these flutes.
They are really fantastic.
I bought the Rudall but thought the standard was excellent. It has a fantastic bottem D and all the notes sound well. The curly boxwood is beautiful and light.
This flute has a fantastic, rich, complex tone and quite good volume.
Had I not had a Copley coming and an Olwell bamboo to fill my loud trad/session needs I’d have gotten this one instead of the R&R. The R&R complements what I have best. I needed a dose of sweet, buttery and wonderful in my flute life.
I might also note that I have never played a flute that was easier to cross-finger and half hole. These Burns flutes are amazing in that regard. Casey’s website says that with an Eb key a guy could have a fully chromatic flute. I thought he was full of bologna. He isn’t.
They take a slightly different embouchre than other flutes I’ve played. They are more responsive to a slightly relaxed embouchre than to a laser air stream, but WOW are they responsive!
The ergonomic fingering is also wonderful. I have great long hands and have no trouble playing a C bamboo. But, even so, I found the combination of the ergonomic fingering and lightness boxwood exquisitely comfortable. Ornaments are very easy and come off quickly and crisply.
Anyway, this Burns standard is excellent and Jessie is great to do business with…always has been for me. Thanks Jessie.
If you were someone else, I might regret selling that Rudall, because I have spent some time with the Standard today and it is just magnificent - sweet and rich and easy - and I liked the Rudall even more! I don’t know what I was thinking. But I am happy to have you have it and love it as I know you will. If you ever decide to sell it, please let me know, as this Standard is its twin. In fact, pieces for the headjoint were switched, because Casey liked the grain better that way. I wonder if I’ll magically pick up new tunes that you’ve played on yours, and vice versa.
