along with online registration (new this year) and bios of the instructors. Register early and often! Early Bird Registration closes August 15…

And don’t forget to book your room at Gavin’s: http://gavins.com/

This will be my first tionol. How does it work? Registration fee includes all lessons? Where are the events all held? I am really looking forward to it but nervously so.

Hi John,

Yes, registration includes all piping lessons (two on Saturday, two on Sunday) and admission to the Saturday night concert. The whole event takes place at one resort in the Catskills, Gavin’s Irish Country Resort. Classes take place in various rooms on the grounds; sessions and the concert take place in the pub. A lot of people who come to the tionól stay right there at Gavin’s; you can book a room there through their website, or by calling them directly. You come to Gavin’s on Friday, you stay the weekend (farewell breakfast is Monday morning!), you learn piping tunes and techniques, you meet lots of other pipers and musicians, and hopefully you go home inspired!

Glad you’re thinking of coming! Feel free to post other questions you may have. And no need to be nervous. You’re coming to an awesome weekend to meet lots of people who have been bitten by the same bug. Misery, I mean piping, loves company…

Cheers,
KAD

So as my first tionol, my wife n kids really want to come along with me…whats for the family to do there? Or should I strongly suggest they stay home? What other accomodations are in the area closest to Gavins? thanks…

There’s a page here http://www.irishvillageusa.com/local-accommodations which covers a fair amount of the inns in the area. Gavin’s is on rt 145, so the closest would be there. You would need to check which places would be open since it’s the end of the season for some.

The newly rebuilt Blackthorn has a lot of family oriented things.

From their website it looks like they will be open. Maybe call to find out which of those activities will still be offered end of October.

They are just off 145 also, big sign at Sunside road, can’t miss it.

Gavins has a little playground (and even a swimming pool!); I know families stay there during Irish Arts week. If they like to hike, there are some lovely day hikes nearby, all over the Catskills.

Thanks, but I’m gonna fly solo n leave em all home. I only need supervision near the bar. Haha
