Hi Everyone
Is it just me or is Nollaig MacCarthaig playing a Mackenzie Full Set on the NPU video? It has a rather uncanny resemblance to a Lancewood full set. Have a closer look when you watch the video next time.

i have never seen the video but itās probably safe to assume he is playing his boxwood Peter Hunter set.
Peter, the wood on his set is pretty dark for boxwood, unless its very old, or has been treated to look older.

Stained or acid treated; treatment with nitric used to be the standard thing for boxwood. Makes a nice nitrocellulose coating, if I have my chemistry right ![]()
Nollaigs full set is a boxwood set made by someone in England (in the vacinity of London), I cannot remember his name, but it is the only full set he ever made, according to Nollaig. The chanter is by Andreas Rogge.
As Pete mentioned up the page, Nollaigs set was made by Peter Hunter of Yorkshire. As far as I know, Sean Potts had a full set from Peter, and maybe Becky Taylor? (I remember her playing her set with some regs on, whether it was all 3, I canāt remember) Unless Nollaigās changed chanters, it was a full Hunter set (the picture of the chess piece posted on the thread about Mounts reminded me of Nollaiogs Chanterā¦)

For those of us unable to access the video through NPU, could someone post a link to the video?
Iād be keen to try and identify a Simack chanter.
There are lots of chanters out there that look like Mackenzie chanters. For example a set made by David Boisvert (greenwood pipes) that was made from Australian Gidgee looks just like Ianās chanter, but with a different windcap.
Hiya Goldieā¦
Hereās a pic of a simackā¦

and hereās a pic of a few of mineā¦

Nowā¦granted that these are MY babies Iād recognice from a mile offā¦but quite frankly I donāt see any similarity⦠![]()

Hi Everyone
It looks almost identical to the first chanter Davey posted (but with only a Cn key. Is that chanter made from Ebony or Lancewood Davey.

Davey,
Iām not trying to say that your cahnters and Ianās chanters are spitting images. I was pointing out that other woods and chanters can look the same at a distance. Your gidgee chanter came to mind as it has a similar colour, the same conical exterior shape, similar key mounts, white bits (dunno what to call them) at the top and bottom of the chanter, and brass windcap/bell cover. What I should have stipulated in my previous post that āin a fuzzy media player video, yours or another makerās chanter could look like a Simackā. Please substitute this statement in place of my previous post.
Your chanterās are, of course, unique to you
.
Nollaig MacCƔrthaigh plays a Peter Hunter boxwood Fullset. He now plays the set with a D chanter boxwood made by Andreas Rogge.

I met Nollaig last year at Week Willie and he was using the Rogge chanter as Fergus mentioned.

[Edited for lack of information]
From where Iām sitting that looks like his Hunter number⦠(Those mounts look like the discs turned on the chess piece in the mounts thread. PH was a one for billiard balls etc.,)
Alan
Iāll be having a tune with him tonight.
He has been playing the Rogge chanter alright, Iām not sure if that is it in the pic though. One of the better ARās that Iāve heard at any rate.
Weāre in The Cobblestoneās, Smithfield Market, Dublin, Ireland if youāre passing. Heās there most Thursdays. Nice tune and fairly civilised usually.
Regards,
Harry.
Hi Harry
Maybe you could put all the rumours straight by asking him which chanter he played on the beginners video. You might also ask if he has any SIMACK chanters secratly tucked away (if he does), ask what he thinks about them.

On the video heās playing the Hunter chanter.
He only got the Rogge chanter in 2003.
Patrick.
I love that first tune played on the NPU tape volume I. Very nice use of the regs.
Harry
Why donāt you and Nolaig stop by The Harp (pub) in Costa Mesa, California. Itās a short jont.
Douglas,
Thanks for the invite, but while I have to contribute a wad of green to the Bush administration for the pleasure of plying my trade under the stars and stripes it aināt going to happen Iām afraid. ![]()
Maybe Arnie could get us over on a special visa or something? Play up āThe Terminatorā thing like he did to get elected. We could market oursleves as coming from an older world to realign the future to ensure the survival of strands of uilleann piping tradition that one day may be used to destroy a race of hitherto indestructable evil robots? (the last bit might be pushing it a bit).
Regards,
Harry.
