I got a new whistle today. I then proceeded to play it until my hands cramped. I have never, EVER, found a whistle so easy to play on first acquaintance. I have also not met another whistle, even including my beloved Silkstone PVC, that played so uttermly smoothly into and above the upper second octave. I will happily swear that even jumping several notes to the high B there was none of the resistance I’ve met on every other whistle I own.
Mack is a pleasure to deal with. I tried several of his whistles. One that my friend Terry had was superb. None of the ones Mack sent me (two that I bought and two that he gave me) were in tune, but I just took one (a CPVC body on a brass tube) out of my stash and the tube came out, so I put a Gen tube on it. It’s too long, so it’s not in tune yet, but I am going to shorten the Gen tube from the top and I have faith that the whistle will play very well after that. Pat O’Riordan has a very popular mnodel that is just a fipple. People use it with a tube from a cheapie. I think Mack’s fipples are great.
