newbie needs help picking out a nice whistle

I’m quite new to playing whistles. I’ve been playing my Generation, Clarke (x2), Dixon, and a few other cheap whistles for a while. I really like my original Clarke. I want to get a nice whistle that has a very sweet and quiet sound while taking less air and actually being in tune with itself. Does anyone have any suggestions?

After doing a bit more searching with different key words I’ve come across people asking very similar questions. I’m sorry for jumping the gun. After reading a few posts, though, I still have some questions:

I think I may try a Parks’ Every Whistle. I’m a bit hesitant, though, because I have pvc whistles and was hoping to get a whistle with a bit of a “snob appeal.” Anyone have suggestions for a metal whistle?

I looked into Hoover whistles. However, they come in different types and I’m not sure which one is the quietest and sweetest of the varieties. Does anyone have experience with several of these whistles that could make a suggestion?

i don’t know about its breath requirements, but the Dixon Trad might be a good choice. also search the voards for the new Blackbird by Jerry Freeman. people seem to really like it though I can’t comment on its looks.

I have a Parks EveryWhistle, and I really like it. It gives me the chance to play it very quietly, but still has a great tone. The only other D whistles I have to compare it to are a Clarke and a Walton. Having said that, I give it to thumbs up. Plus, what other whistle let’s you play at 1:00 AM in a dorm without bothering anyone else?

I also have an Every Whistle and really like it.

If you want a metal whistle that is fairly quiet and that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with a Mellow Dog by Jerry Freeman (get the C body as well for $5 more). He also just had the Blackbird come out, which looks like it would be another good option.

For Mack Hoover, his narrow bore brass is supposed to be his quietest I believe. I don’t have one, but I’ve read some good reviews here.

I have a Hoover Whitecap, on a Generation Eb nickel body. Has a stunningly sweet and clear sound, that I wouldn’t characterize as quiet - about medium.

I also have a Hoover PVC mezzo A - very sweet sounding, medium-quiet. I believe it was custom built for someone, and intended not to be as quiet as others.

Hoover low E, PVC, the quietest of the lot.

If you have a particular kind of whistle voice you are looking for, contact Mack - he’s very helpful.

I owned an all pvc whistle from Dixon that was fairly nice, until it melted in my car one afternoon. I owned another Dixon that was Aluminum with a black plastic head that I had in my back pocket once as I got into my car. It didn’t hold my weight well. They may be fine whistles but I’m pretty sure that I’m cursed with them…

I think you should consider selling your car. It obviously doesn’t like whistles.
