Newbie key question

Please forgive my ignorance, but most of the tunes in my trad books are in key of D, 2 sharps, or G, 1 sharp. What key is it that has 4 sharps? Thanks.

E.

E major, C sharp minor, or perhaps F sharp dorian

Thanks! Looks like I’ll be shopping for a new whistle.

It’s easier to transpose, then you don’t have to re-learn E fingerings.

You’ll want a whistle in E (to play pretending it’s D) or in B (to play pretending it’s G).

Thanks again! I was going to attempt to rewrite it in key of D. Never thought of just ‘pretending’ on a whistle of the proper key. I sure am not ready to learn new fingerings at this point.

I have neither an E whistle nor a B whistle, but I do have an A. Most of the tunes I have come across in the key of E are blues and rock, so that pesky half-holed D# rarely shows up.

I’m lost.

It appears that Generations are not available in E or B, but inEb and Bb. Oh what to do? :boggle:

The E Water Weasel has a good reputation. Most makers will make whistles on these 2 keys; i’m surprised Generations doesn’t have them, i thought they had everything between Bb and G.

Are you playing with another instrument that can’t transpose? What is this piece you want to play?

first thing you should do is check the tune to see if there are any G# or D# in there. You may safely disregard little filler notes, in the middle of triplets at the end of a bar, for instance.

I went thru the E whistle search. Only Susatos make cheapies unless you count Shaws. The Shaw I have is unplayable unless you have three lungs or want to fool with it. Most of the premium builders make the Es of course.

Generation does not make an A, B, C#, E, F#, or G# whistle.

Susato makes E and B.

Amazing Grace.

Once I was field, but now am filed.
