New whistles for me! (noobie reviews)

So I just got my order from ye old Whistle Shop a couple of days ago. It consisted of:

Clarke Original (unpainted)
Feadog
Walton’s Little Black D
Walton’s Mellow D
Mec C
Nose Flute

GLEE!

I have a bad ear. Well, two of 'em. Worked in a machine shop, doncha know? So I can’t really say if they’re in tune. Next on me list is a tuner. I’ll add my thoughts on them to the pile of more ejikated ones anyhow.

All of my opinions are in respect to the only other whistles I own, a Sweetone and a Meg, which are more or less identical.

Clarke: Very breathy, just like I’ve always heard. Has no back-pressure to speak of, and takes a lot of air. It still takes less air than my low D, so I don’t mind. I love the way it looks, and the wood block makes it seem like less of a toy to those no so whilstly inclined.

Feadog: The most professional whistle I have. It takes very little air, has a pleasant amount of back-pressure, and a moderately scratchy voice. It responds much more quickly than any of my other whistles, though I’m not quick enough for it to make a difference. If I’m sloppy, the Feadog sqeaks the beginning of each note. I’m sure that after I’m quite a bit better, this is going to get all of the play time.

Walton’s LBD: Like the Feadog, but not quite as fast, and much scratchier-sounding. It would be fine, but the bell note just doesn’t sound right. D in the second octave sounds worse. I’ve heard that it tends to be sharp, so I’m gonna try that thing with the tape. I hope it works, because I like the rough sound. Also, this whistle actually weighs less than nothing. I keep it inside my Mellow to keep it from floating away.

Walton’s Mellow D: My favorite. A little softer than my Meg, with a bit of raspiness, the tone is perfect. It’s much thicker than the other whistles; I can almost fit the fipple of the Feadog inside the body. It plays effortlessly, and doesn’t squeak at me unless I play especially bad. Not quite as responsive as the Feadog, but I can’t play very fast.

Meg C: Um, I think it sounds just like my Meg D, but I don’t know any songs in C. I’ll have to learn one.

Nose Flute: I can’t play anything on this except loud "woooop"s. Much like a slide whistle, though maybe that will change if I keep practicing. The look on people’s faces if you don’t explain what you’re doing is priceless. A steal at 90¢.

I’m curious, does anyone know what the Clarke is made of? Tin, I would assume? I love the shiny look, but I leave my swamp cooler on 24-7, and it’s already starting to blemish. What could I use to polish it? Me buddy’s got some chrome polish, but I’m not sure how well it would work, or how safe it is to eat.

Also, anybody have some helpful advice with taping/doing whatever to the Little Black D?

Thanks,

Yes Clarkes are rolled tin plate. There is a whole page about tweaking whistles on the main site here is a link http://www.chiffandfipple.com/tweak.html you can experiment with that.

Calrke’s original is made of a sheet of tin roller up and soldered together. Fipple is glued and “crunched” into place.
