Yes people!
I have a Clarke D and I enjoy it!!! There! I said it!
It’s a wonderfull whistle for the more slow tunes or smooth tunes, and I really like it. So now I got a D Clarke and a D Waltons. Next I’m gonna get a D Susato or Oak, and maybe a Low D.
I’m gonna also try to make a whistle, Hope it’ll work…
Um.. What Clarke? A Clarke Sweetone, a Clarke Original or a Clarke Meg? I think the first two are wonderful as well! (Don’t really like the Meg… the one I got was really really terrible)
My first whistle was a Clarke C. Lovely. The fipple block eventually fell out, but I still have the whistle. I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it.
When I want to play just about anything indoors, I generally reach for my Clarke D. Very friendly whistle without being at all snooty.
Good choice. And the Clarke tutor book is my favorite of all I have seen so far. I learned to read music by working through this book. Well worth having.
I have 5 Clarke originals - all in D. One is just bare tin, and is showing its age. The others are the black paint jobbies. (I ain’t scared o’ no gold diamonds…) The latest Clarke I got was the one tweeked by the Whistle Shop. It’s a nice whistle…
I like the Sweetune a lot. I can’t play any faster tunes with the Originals I’ve got, since I have a bad habit of playing faster than I’m really capable of, and it just takes too much air, especially in the 2nd octave, so I just lose the pace with all those breathing pauses I have to take. But thats my problem. Glad you got yourself whistle you enjoy.
Is your “Whistle Shop Special” much different than you other Clarkes? I’m thinking about picking one of those up from Thom but would like to hear some opinions first.
I really like it. Here’s how it compares to another Clarke (black paint, gold diamond’s) original who’s only modification is a bit of squishing of the windway:
The tone of the Whistle Shop’s tweeked version is purer - way less airy. The upper register’s notes are still breathy but speak more clearly.
The re-shaping of the mouthpiece on WS’s version is so much kinder to my lower lip than the untweeked version, and looks really cool . (Do chicks dig lower lip callouses? )
The wood plug is much more secure on the WS whistle.
I’d buy another WS tweeked Clarke if something ever happened to the one I have now.
If there’s some particular aspect I’ve not covered let me know and I’ll give it another go…
I just got a Clarke sweetone recently as well (that and a Clare for my first 2 whistles). I do like the sound, but unfortunately it has been confiscated by my children and I don’t get to play it as much as I would like. I’m thinking of getting an original next…either that or an Oak. You can never have too many whistles I am told!
Thanks Aldon, that has answered many of my questions about the “WS tweaked”. I have an ‘original’ (yes, gold diamonds) and love it for aires and playing quietly when others would be less appreciative of my
?talents? I love it for itself, but have wanted the ‘feel’ of the ori with a little more OOMPH. It sounds like the tweaked is everything I want and hope for in a TIN. I’m gonna’ get one based on your review. (Don’t worry, I won’t hold you liable or responsible for injuries)
I have played a Clarke Original for a couple of years and in that time the tone has sweetened considerably as the instrument has ‘played in’. Clarkes are notoriously quiet though and can get drowned out.
If you want to make your own, I will be happy to pass on some tips, I have been making wooden and copper instruments for about 18 months, mainly for fellow devotees. Go for it!
Thank you all for your replys. I find all of those very interesting(aspecially the tweeked whistle).
I was asked which Clarke I have. I have a Clarke…(drums please)…(stop+hihat)…ORIGINAL!!!

I have only the Clarke original and a green-mouthpiece Waltons. I truely need a better whistle than thw waltons, suggestions? I’m looking for the low-costing ones…
Clarkes are very good whistles ,but they tend to clog real easily so take care of your clarke original…cheap but worth every nickle. Theres 2 good songs to play with the Clarke Homeruler on Micks page and The Waterman by Mike Mcgoldrick!!
