Beware, a new virus is rampaging today. I’ve had 3 infected emails come to my work email address today. It’s the My_Doom_M virus, for whatever that’s worth.
Yes, it’s brought down Google - searches bring back server errors.
Google’s back! 3:13 PM EDT.

Do we have confirmation that Google’s crash was due to this virus?
I think it’s highly unlikely, given what i know about Google.
Oh well…

Not directly, but indirectly responsible, at least.

Basically what it did was it overwhelmed Google’s search engines. The virus didn’t infect Google’s computers, but it accessed Google from infected PCs, looking for new email addresses to send itself to. Stupid stupid stupid.
Here’s the “meat” of that Slashdot article:

By now Google must have figured out a way to block the queries done by the virus.
Maybe more than just Google, Wired News has this story;

Yes. In the artcle i posted (the one from Slashdot):
Once the virus is started, it searched the users files for domain names. Once it spotted a domain name (e.g. ‘@example.com’, or in '> www.example.com> '), it will search various search engines for valid e-mail addresses within these domains. These search engines include Lycos, Google, Altavista, Yahoo and possibly others.
The only thing I got today was three opportunities to share 56 million dollars from some account overseas. I guess I could be rich if I hadn’t deleted them.

Google is fine here in England at 23:13 GMT.
the virus istself doesnt take down google
google runs on linux.
mydoom in its myriad variants infects the worlds most efficient virus distribution system..M$ winblows
Instead what mydoom did was creat a ddos attack at google(distributed denial of service), using infected computers to the gleeee of the evil HaX0r.!!thats is all..nothing to see here..move along..
 Just a word of warning. From personal experience, Linux systems can be infected with viruses and worms. (Not the virus mentioned in this thread, MyDoom.., thankfully.) I had a Linux data/web server on my home network along with a couple of Windows based machines. I had full Norton protection on the Windows machines but nothing on the Linux server, (I was told in Hacking Linux Exposed that virus protection was not necessary.) After 3 months of use, the Linux machine performance when into the dumper. I found out that it had the Linux.Jac.8759 virus, the Linux.Svat virus, and Linux.Slapper.Worm. The removal was not too difficult but it was a real lesson for me.
It seems that whenever you think you are secure, there is some idiot out on the Internet that will slap you down.
