I wanted to say hi to everybody. I am Gerard from the Netherlands. Just turned 24 and a huge fan of everything that has to do with ireland and scotland.
I teach history as a teacher and every time I start about it my pupils let out a big sigh unfortunately, haha! Great history though, and great music!
I was googling a bit for UP forums and finally found this one and uilleannforum. At first hand I was only reading a few things
but I wanted to join the forums in order to read up on information, talk with you guys about the uilleann pipes and learn from the people on
this forum about our common interest and love for the pipes.
as I said: I hope to learn a lot from you guys and looking for a lot of fun, pleasure and talks about the pipes!
Sorry about that. Could’ve given a bit more information I suppose !
I do play the pipes yes. Actually I currently got a Marc van Daal set. Waiting for the drones to finish to get a half set.
Currently learning it by myself. Using the book from Clarke: “A new approach to Uilleann piping”.
I hope to not only pick up many new piper friends on the forums and information about this great instrument but perhaps also some
pipers that live close by with whom I can share experience or just play some cool sessions!
Thanks for the links by the way, familiar with both! still figuring out if the NVUP is something for me.
Of course it’s great to be a member, but I don’t really know if they also teach/give lessons or anything so I still have to find that out.

I don’ t think it goes beyond an annual meeting but that will give you an opportunity to meet other people who own pipes and get lessons from the visiting piper, Cormac Cannon this year and that’s in itself a good opportunity to meet a very fine piper.
so where do you live in nl?
I am from the town with a bridge too far
besides the dutch tionol in sept, our Belgian friends have one in may
from the fir bolg invitation: The Fourteenth Belgian Tionol will take place during the weekend starting 24th May 2013 at the Espace Belvaux, rue Belvaux, 189, 4030 Grivegnée (Liège).
We are very lucky this year, as Michael “Blackie” O’Connell has kindly accepted to be the guest piper from Ireland.
You are absolutely right! At what kind of level do pipers play at such meetings? I got the pipes for about 10 months now so i’m still very busy learning. Takes 21 years so there is still a far road ahead but I will get there one day ! But anyway, i’m a bit hesitant to go to these meetings already since i’m still quite new to uilleann piping, but I will surely give it a try in the incoming years! Perhaps 2014?
I live in Overijssel. East of the Netherlands, near Almelo and Hengelo (bigger cities)! If I recall my literary knowledge correctly you live in Arnhem then?
Not that far away from here! You are a member of the NVUP? Perhaps you have some other info that could help me get started here on the forums and uilleann piping in general? (goes for all you guys of course! )
Sounds fantastic though! I assume I can sign up for these meetings?
Maybe you can get a few lessons from Rob van Dijk. He’s in Enschede.
The area is not without piping history, there was a meeting there twenty years or so ago. I drove Mick O Brien up there, inevitably got lost, taking a detour into Germany.
Mr Gumby! Thank you kindly for the tip! I actually mailed Rob van Dijk and received a reply from him.
We are gonna try to figure out if it’s possible to set up a lesson and perhaps see from there? But i’m sure I could learn a lot from him.
Haha yeah it’s an easy road to Germany from Overijssel! I can imagine how your trip went!
