My new Susato arrived yesterday, the one given by Mike Kelhorn(thanks again). It happens to be there new very small bore in high D. What a whistle! Requires almost no wind in both registers, clear tone, solid tuning, yet is a strong performer like it’s larger brother. If you close your eyes you’ll swear you are playing a whistle costing 4 times as much.
This whistle is a true winner and when it hits the stores I predict it will fly off the shelves.
I also think it’s worth noting that this whistle came in response to a customer’s satisfaction issue, something we probably didn’t expect from this firm..well think again, they care about us and our whistling happiness..
Get your’s now while you can, avoid the rush when the word gets out.
Dave,
You lucky man! I’ve been asking around but I don’t think we’ll see these this side of the pond for a while, Susato have been making them for less than a month apparently.
Does the smaller bore help reduce the volume of the second octave?
That’s the only real complaint I have with Susato whistles… they’re much too loud in the second octave.

They should be available in Ireland, from around St. Patrick’s day. Hold on, Martin…hoooooold on a little longer!

Steve,
you don’t mean…
just when I…
and you’ll have…
By St Paddy’s?
OOOH!
What about the Kerry Songbird? Same timescale?
Dave, give us a little more info, please:
- Do you need to lean into above the high g?
- Can you keep the sixth hole covered for balance above the high g (you can’t on the “Small Bore”)?
- Are the octave transitions easy?
- Is there a big difference in volume between the first and second octaves?
- Is the sound similar to the Small Bore?
- Is it a good time to buy 3Fish stock?
Yah, Mike has sent me free stuff because I phoned up and made
suggestions. Thanks for the review!

There is no need to pressure notes in the second octave..yes the sixth hole can be kept covered…Octave transitions are effortless..any difference in volume is very subtle between the two…Sound is similar, but somehow more refined and less recorderlike..And I’ll take the fifth about the stock…I love this whistle it’s hard to put it down..
Very exciting Dave! I can’t wait till they send me my free new one to replace the old! Just joking! I’m really happy that you now have a whistle you can enjoy.
Best wishes, Tom
One last question… how’s the OXX XOX C natural?
I know OXX OOO is great on a regular bore Susato, but I’m in the habit of using “forked” fingering which is horribly flat.
forget that, how is the OXXOOO fingering? ![]()
Is there anyplace that carries them besides susato.com? Thom, you going to stock them? I am accumulating a list of stuff the whistle shop has that I need to get. ![]()

The OXX OOO is right on solid C natural, but the other is a hair bit flat…
Hi avanutria,
I try not to post commercial stuff here at all any more (this is by personal choice, no one from this board has ever asked me to not do such postings…) — but since you did ask:

Hi Thom!
Thanks for the link, if you get in trouble I’ll take the heat. ![]()
If these new Susatos are anything like I think they are, their popularity will probably be nothing short of incredible.
I ordered a couple of them this morning in hopes of beating the flood of orders that will probably soon be placed.
I’ll post a review after I’ve had a chance to get to know them fairly well.
Hello Folks,
I just received my susato order today.
I thought I would break away from playing them and let you know what I think.
IMVHO…
As part of my collection I own the susato set D,C, & Bb
I also have the B
And a low Eb, really not worth mentioning.
What I really should of done was order another C. But, at the time I could not justify ordering a whislte that I already had.
I ordered a G.
Which really shocked me!
Perfect for wee little hands. More for Leprechauns perhaps.
It can also be a wee bit ear piercing. At least right now for beginner high G playing ![]()
My Dog did not like it one bit.
I also order an Eb. Which I am pleased with. I compared it to the D, at least in tonal quality. The smaller bore has a very pleasing sound to it. It is not as loud or as shrill as my D reg. bore whistle.
The tuning is acceptable, and the natural is oxxoxo
Well there’s my 2 cents worth for what it matters.
Laura
ps. I just re-checked The Whistle shop site.
Shucks, He does not carry a very small bore C.

Don’t hesitate to order directly from the Susato website… their customer service is great.

According to the Susato website - D is the lowest VSB, there is no C available.
