Hi,
I am a new member but have been lurking for awhile. A little about myself: I teach second grade, go to seminary on the weekends, and help with worship in my church on Sundays.
I play the piano and have a lot of different musical instruments that I tinker with. I have a piano, penny whistle, several Native American style flutes, a classical flute (that hurts my wrist too much to play), a bamboo xiao, 2 ocarinas, a mountain dulcimer, 2 or 3 recorders, 2 ukuleles, a xaphoon, a Hall glass flute, and if I can think of anything else I’m not mentioning it because I am embarrassing myself!! ![]()
I love to play (on the piano) hymns and classical music. I think I have so many instruments because I have been looking for a portable instrument I can play on when I can’t get to my piano. Plus I need some variety here (um, looks like I have enough variety!) I love to listen to most music.
After all my instrument trying, I think the penny whistle is the instrument that will be that portable one I was looking for.
I got my penny whistle in a trade with Geoffrey Ellis (for another mountain dulcimer that I had!). It is made from African Blackwood and has a cedar plug. It is simple but classy! I have had it for about a year now. I love that I can play it anywhere and I can pick hymns out of it without having a book nearby. I also want to learn to play some Irish music.
I bought Bill Ochs’ book (The Clark Tin Whistle) and Tomas O’Canainn’s book (Traditional Slow Airs of Ireland). Spring break (as a teacher) starts for me on Thursday so I hope to start going through Bill’s book and doing some methodical practice.
Well, anyway, that’s probably more than you wanted to know . . .
