Here’s a new style of keyed chanter. This one was made by French pipemaker Benoit Tremolieres. I’m not advertising it, especially as I have not played it, just letting everybody know. Apparently, all the chromaticisms are easily playable.

I don’t see much in the photo. Can you post any other photos?
Well, sorry for the size, it appears to be quite big ! Here’s the only other picture I got.

And would it be possible to post these photos in a
smaller size, say, 500 pixels? That makes it much easier
to view for lazy folk like me. ![]()
Thanks, much better! ![]()
Be sure to use protection when playing with this device!
Holy Shinola!
PD.
Certainly has the looks of a bassoon or oboe maker’s workmanship.
It looks like an old steam engine. Has anyone played any chanter that has a similar key style? I know there is a pipemaker that who does keywork like that, i can’t remember his name thought…maybe someone knows that to.

Dan
Brian Howard uses a similar principle for keying his chanters. There’s also a photo somewhere on this forum of a Taylor(esque) chanter with similar key work.
Bryan Howard, that’s the name i was trying to think of. Has anyone played one of his keyed chanters?
Cool…he is not a slave to tradition.
This could do for uilleann pipes what Boehm did for flutes (take that any way you would like).
No E

For those who don’t know him,Benoit Tremolières is an outstanding french
piper, who has decided to make pipes some years ago, and with the help of
Alain Froment, He has made astonishing plans and prototypes of a newly
designed set of pipes:
REGULATORS WITH TUNING SLIDES which make the tuning easier and more
precise.And also gives NEW CHORDS.
CHANTER WITH NEW KEYS: ergonomic keys and saxophone-like keys which permits
to play easily in G minor, E major (this is not a joke!)
and this is a response frae the ever shy Ken

Is there a new generic name for this new instrument ? If not I would
suggest that perhaps there shoud be, they are obviously neither Union
nor Uilleann Bagpipes. Perhaps the Messianic Pipes ?

Well, in fact, Benoit explained to me some time ago (about 9 years) that he was looking for a system that would allow him to play tunes in G minor with ease (he’s a great fan of fiddle Clare music). So he spent a lot of time trying to design this, making on his own what the oboe makers did before, effectively inspired by the Boehm system. So the concept is at least 10 years old, but the first chanter to come out of his workshop was made last year. Once again, I have not played one at the moment, but as I live not too far from his place, I think I’ll have a go myself, just being curious. ![]()
I’d be curious to hear how
their playability is, like,
easy to get used to, tone,
rollscranstriplets etc… etc…
Please report back you findings
Oliver.
Cool…he is not a slave to tradition.
…but he should be!
I wonder if UP’s will go the way of the Pastoral Pipe?
I think it’s good somebody sometimes think about possible evolutions, otherwise, even uilleann pipes wouldn’t exist… Knowing Benoit, I think his system won’t hamper the traditional way of playing, because he’s really rooted in the tradition, at least when playing is concerned.
Having not tried it yet, I keep my judgement for myself. Maybe it’s great, maybe it’s crap. Those who don’t like it can always stick to the old style, and that’s what I’m doing for the moment. ![]()
I think Buskersean might have one ![]()
