New here, Looking for info on a flute/fife

All, I have had this flute or fife in my possession since a child, it belonged to my grandfather who was a German Soldier in WWII. he brought it with him when he emigrated to the US after the war. I am interested in learning to play and also interested in any information about this instrument. I can post some photos but I am not sure how to do that here, and if anyone has information about beginners instructions I’d be grateful. Oh the name above reads, Peter Renk leipzig

Hi, and welcome. Upload your photos to the photo-sharing site of your choice like Image Shack or Flikr, then post the [img] links here. See: https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/guide-to-posting-images/22873/1

Thanks, just did that…

Based on the makers mark (GHS and lyre), your flute (which looks like a fife to me) was made by Gottlob Hermann Huller who was a flute maker based in Schoneck, Germany, between 1883 and 1950.

Thanks… Now I need to find a place to make it playable again, and clean it up some.

Oh, what about the name on it? Peter Renk Leipzig, anyone have any thoughts on that?

If you Google “Peter Renk, Leipzig” you’ll find the name associated with a number of types of musical instruments (stringed, woodwinds) as well as publications and arrangements. Perhaps Peter Renk is the name of a distributor/store for music and instruments and yours was made on order for that shop. Just thinkin’…

Best wishes.

Steve

Thanks. I’m hoping to get this instrument back into service now.

Any suggestions and where I can find some self taught lessons, my youngest son and I are interested in learning to play. I am musically inclined, I play guitar and drums, and I’d love to add this new instrument to my skill set.
