New flute, by Francois Baubet

I really enjoyed the playing on all three clips. The delrin had a
brighter, clearer sound. The Murray seemed to have less pop
in the ornaments — really on the basis of those clips, I wouldn’t
know which one to choose. Showing once again I guess that it’s
90% down to the player.

That sums up my observations as well. It seemed more “sharp” (not as far as tuning goes, but the quality of the sound) and crisp. I thought maybe it could have also been a difference in how close he was to the microphone. I know that I can record the same instrument multiple times on my computer, and just a small change in where I’m sitting or which direction I am facing can have noticeable effects on the sound when I listen back to it. Regardless, there most certainly is a non-placebo difference between the two, be it because of the flutes, recording, a playing difference, or some other reason. The differences pop out more if you listen back and forth to the same small part on both recordings in quick succession. Very very close, though.

Glad I wasn’t the only one who noted a difference!

It was an interesting “Pepsi challenge” alright. As i said i nailed all three. As i am the owner of all three maybe that’s what tipped the scale, but i admit i had to toss a coin..
In (my) real world the flutes rank Murray ->Baubet Mopane (because of its interesting complex sound) → Baubet Delrin. That said i could easily live the rest of my life with either one of them. The difference is minute, not as night and day!
