New Bouzouki / Celtic Star

I picked up a Celtic Star branded bouzouki off of eBay the other day and just got it. I thought I’d give a few general impressions.

It has a solid spruce top and rosewood fingerboard. The built-in pickup might not be top of the line, but for $300 it works and sounds great.

The tone is quite nice and seems to be a bit more balanced as compared with a Trinity College zouk which I think sounds a bit more bright on the high end. I borrowed a friend’s TC zouk for comparison. I’m using D’Addario strings on the Celtic Star zouk.

The Celtic Star bouzouki is “designed in Germany” but built in Romania according to the paper inside the soundhole. I was extremely pleased to know it was not made in China as I’ve never been thrilled with most instruments made there.

For $300-350 USD you’ll enjoy getting to know the Irish bouzouki a little better. Maybe some day I will have the $3,000 for a Crump, but until then this will have to do!

Cheers!

Congrats Matt! I’ve only played one CS zouk, but I thought it was a great instrument for the money. I’m still a TC man, but CS provides a really nice product, IMO. For three clams you can sure check out the zouk in good style with one. When the time comes to trade up they aren’t very hard to sell, so that’s a plus too.

I’m still loving it and it’s helped with the creative process of writing some original material too. Thanks for the tip Tim!

Congrats on your new instrument.
