Need help with whistle art

I have been planning a kite sail with a large amount of knot work and it currently just has a “stick” the knots are woven around. The “stick” is the place I want to put a whistle. The problem is no matter how many times I try drawing a whistle, it just looks like a funky stick. Because of the media I’m working with, it can only be a line drawing. I’ve even tried an image search on the internet to give me some ideas, but I was unable to come up with anything.

So, how can I draw a recognizable whistle?
Have an example?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this URL for Tully whistles and check out his logo. The one on the box my Tully whistle came in is burned into the wood so the fields are reversed. Very striking that way, I thought.

Maybe a white outline on a dark background would stand out more at a distance?

Drawing is 98% seeing things correctly and 2% ‘learning how to draw’. A person doesn’t even need hands to draw (Joni Eareckson Tada is a good example, I love her artwork and her life’s story).

My advice is to stare at what you’re trying to draw. Stare at it for hours if you have to. Eventually you’ll find things getting easier.

Thanks Notus. I was trying to draw it from a side view. The top does look more recognizable. I’ll try it from the top.

Cranberry, interesting quote. I’ll keep it in mind with other future projects.

Pick up Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain if you haven’t read it…it’s really fascinating.

How to draw a whistle, by me:

Yep, looks like a funny stick.

It’s TelegramSam’s fault, of course. (that’s who originally posted the link to artpad
over on the pub.)

I am definately impressed.

My fine motor skills in my right hand aren’t up to it on the computer, but I could probably do that with a pencil and paper.

Ever used a Wacom tablet? Excellent things, those.

Thanks, Cranberry.

Hmm. You could get a lefthanded mouse!

Really, with the artpad I have trouble getting clean lines. Those short strokes are a necessity,
not a stylistic choice… long lines tend to go crazy.

If you really want to do art on the computer, though, you ought to get a drawing tablet.
Though with time and patience, some very nice work can be done on the computer,
even with a mouse.

(edit fixes quoting)

I still like actual paper and pencils though. I think they create a better…what’s the word…atmosphere. I’m just an old-fashioned romantique that way, though.
