I’m in the “slavishly copying the people I like” stage of whistling and I love Gaelic Storm’s rendition of “The Bonnie Ship the Diamond/Tamlinn” on their album “Gaelic Storm.” I found the music for Tamlinn (thanks Wanderer!) but I’m having trouble getting the rhythm anywhere close. OK, I’m playing slower and more mechanically but it doesn’t even sound like the same tune. Anyone got any ideas? Can anyone tell me what the fiddle is doing in the way of ornaments/articulation? What I’m lacking is the driving sound of that fiddle. Call me an idiot, but it almost sounds like they are playing it as a jig, not a reel. Help!

A lot of reels sound entirely different when played slowly.
I share your anxiety Walrii. First, the whistle will never play a tune exactly like a fiddle does. IMHO the whistle doesn’t have the drive that you speak of. It flavors the music differently and adds it’s own very interesting dimension, but not with the same drive.
Second, the only way to get where you want to be is with practice, and lots of it. Tam Linn may be too much of a challenge at this time. It’s a tough reel. Some good reels that are easier to learn: Highway to Limerick, Trip to Pakistan, Glass of Beer, Merry Blacksmith.
Perhaps even more effective than miming ‘stewed prunes’
