Need Geek Assistance, Please

OK, I am taking two classes this summer. They start Tuesday, so I need to do this FAST.

One of them is this mandatory class in computer applications. It requires Microsoft Office Professional and some training software that works with it. I got the training software installed, and the MOP just arrived ($$$$!!!).

Here’s the question: I already have Microsoft Works installed on this computer. I now need to install Microsoft Office Professional. Can I just install MOP without doing anything else? Or, do I need to uninstall Microsoft Works first?

I’m asking because Works has Microsoft Word. Is this going to cause a meltdown when I install the new stuff?

I would think the new software will just make a home for itself and live there politely, but you never know.

I think it will overwrite your older version of Word. I don’t think it’ll cause any problems. I don’t think you need to uninstall Works.

You shouldn’t have to uninstall your Works Program. If its just the word processing aspect of it you’re worried about, don’t fret. Works uses Microsoft Works Word Processor, and Office used Microsoft Word - two completely different programs. There should be no software conflicts if you were to install Office. Typical Works Bundle: Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Database, Calendar, Task Launcher ||| Typical Office Bundle - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, etc.. Hope this helped.

Don’t have to…
Really think that you will use Works again after you have MS Office Pro on?

Oddly enough, it is Microsoft Word. And, there is also Microsoft Works. Quicken is also on it.

The day I bought this computer, the one I bought wasn’t available. I didn’t want to have one shipped, so I was going to go to another store. The manager gave me one that had just been delivered to the store from an order that had been cancelled. He said it had everything on it that I ordered, but he didn’t tell me that it had MORE than that. Like about 4 times more memory, an infinitely better CD, etc. It was a top-of-the-line machine. I didn’t discover this until the fan died last summer and the diagnostics told me what-all was on it. I had noticed some odd things, but . . .

I guess maybe the person they built this for wanted Word, but not all of Office. So maybe they got just the Word on top of the Works the machine came with. It’s definitely both of them, and the Word is not part of Works. It’s separate. Hmmm.

I’ve never used it. I’ve only used Word and Microsoft One-Note.

Until the instructor said that Word didn’t come with Works, I hadn’t realized it wasn’t a part of it.

I use the rest of Office all the time at work, but never needed it at home.

I certain cases word is bundled with works as part of the package (at least it is this side of the pond).
You get word, works, microsoft money, encarta and autoroute as a bundle. Check the disks you got with the laptop and see if it is there.

I would agree with the others, no problem re-loading Office over the top of what you have. MS is pretty good at spotting licensed versions of their own products and saving the newer version.

It’s not a laptop. This is my desktop.

OK, everyone hold your breath . . . I’m gonna do it now!

Yaaay! It went fine!

It asked me if I wanted the newer version or the older, and then it deleted the old ones.

Thanks, everyone! You were a great help!
