Need advice for a visit

Hi Gang,

My home town here in northern Minnesota seems to be a Celtic-free zone. So I’ve taken it upon myself to submerge fully into the music with a visit to Ireland. This November (10th to 20th) is the time.

Having never been east of Pittsburgh however, I was wondering where I should visit while there. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. A Whistle/Music intense experience would be a great thing. I thank you in advance!!

Hi Jim! The internet is a great way to do a bit of research on this, as is your local travel agent. Let them know what your interests are, and they’re more than happy to figure out where you might like to go.

Be careful when you ask a local where you can find music. We did this our first night in Kanturk, and got directed to a place where two guys played Garth Brooks and Elvis Presley music. Ask for a session, and you’ll have more luck.

There is a lot more session type music in the towns than there is in the small villages, which made it rough for me, as I had no interest in going anywhere bigger than Mallow. Last trip was Co. Cork and Kerry, this one will be Galway and possibly up to Donegal, and we’re doing our session research online.

Best of luck, and let us know how it works out!

I just used a C&F link to get this: http://www.liveirishmusic.com/

Looks useful!

If you let me know roughly when you’re coming (via e-mail), I’ll look up my list of festivals and see what’s on. But there is not likely to be much between now and next spring.

Generally, Counties Clare, Galway, Kerry, Donegal and West Cork are great places to find live trad. music.
