Hi,
I’m going crazy trying to find a new tune to learn. Not that there aren’t a ton of songs out there, It’s just that I can’t find one to fit my mood. I prefer slow aires to dance music, so I’m looking for something perhaps airish or maybe um, balladish (I love inventing words). How about something appalachian or classical would be nice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It’s hard without knowing what you already know. Amazing Grace is an easy slow tune that works well on flute.
How about learning a jig or a polka this time? ![]()

You could try “Da Slockit Light.” It’s played pretty slow (sounds like a lament to me…not sure if it is):
The above link calls it a reel. I learned it at the local session and they play it pretty slow “and with feeling.” hehe ![]()
It’s a nice tune.

How about Leon’s Waltz? It’s got some of the “feel” of an air, along with some of the wild punch of a good dance tune:

It’s a nice piece.

The other evening we were all driving home from CiCi’s pizza, and listening to the radio. Remember “Closing Time” (SemiSonic) ?
The boys turned it up, it sounded so nice.
I picked it up easily on my flute when I got home. Start on 2nd octave D, play it slow.
(Well, you wanted different!!! ![]()

I was going to suggest you try a waltz, but James beat me to it. There are lots of lovely ones out there, from lots of different traditions, so you’re bound to find some you like. I you can, try to get hold of one or more of the three volumes of The Waltz Book. I’m sure a Google search will turn it up. Lots and lots of great tunes, including notes from the people who wrote many of them on where they were composed, what they mean to the composer, etc.

I’ve always loved “Cape Clear”, and just recently found a recording of it by Larry Nugent. Another nice one I’ve been fooling with is “Glasgow” – from there I’m going into either “Dunmore Lasses” or “The Maple Leaf” (both reels – I start slow and then pick up the tempo). Now if I could just remember where I found them! But they should be searchable via Tunefinder …
Crested Hens (a French waltz on a Solas CD), or Wals Voor Polle (a Belgian waltz on The House Band’s “Stonetown”).
Thanks all!!! I will look into waltzes a little later but in the meantime I found the Bachs Minuet on Wandering Whistlers site. Does anyone have any tried Japanese Shakuhachi music? I know I’m bein a little sacraligious here, but for me novelty is the spice of life ![]()
Someone suggested Crested Hens, but how about a slow reel, like Spoil the Dance?
As for shakuhachi stuff . . . I haven’t played any.

O’Connell’s Lamentation is a nice soft starting song that seems to me
to have a passionate middle and then allows you to cool down near
the end. I always seem to kill the time in the middle of it though.
One place to get the sheet music (I do not know of the history or
of anyone that plays it)

Arran boat is another slow song that I like although it is
rather simple, I still like it.
