narrow vs. wide bore

What is the difference?? I have looked everywhere for an explanation and can’t find one..So can someone please explain this to a whistle idiot…

i’m no pro, but i’ll take a stab at it…narrow vs large has to do with the diameter of the whistle tube. This is one of the factors that can contribute to volume. However, its by far not the only factor. My Chieftian A is much smaller in diameter than my Hoover A. However the Hoover is twice as quiet. But it seems when one sees such a difference listed, the maker is attempting to indicate which of his/her whistles is louder than the other. Wide of course is usually louder.

As usual, Tomcat is right on the mark…Narrow bore may mean quieter, but not always. Many narrow bores have an agility - a nimbleness - that subjectively allows very quick playing. It is not a fingering thing. It is more the response of the whistle itself TO the fingering. Things seem to happen ‘quicker’, subjectively, from the player’s standpoint. The tone of a NB is often a bit ‘thinner’ than a standard bore - in a positive way. There is a purity of sound in a NB that is difficult to describe.

There are so many times that words are simply inadequate…Slow airs on a good NB have an ethereal quality that must be experienced to be appreciated…

I’m guessing that the difference in sound has to do with the amount of air in the tube. Narrower bore means less total volume, so you get less air being displaced into the room, so somewhat less volume. More responsive because it’s easier to change the sound, since you have less air you have to manipulate?

Obviously there are more factors involved than just the tube size. What has been said is all true; but after it’s all been said, the whistle is still a mystery. And I for one intend to keep it that way.
