So I was flipping through TV channels at 3AM last night, trying to find something to watch that wasn’t a paid advertisement or religious broadcast. Surprise! A whistle player jumped up on the screen. Sure, it was still an advertisement, but one with a whistle!
Tim Janis CD’s. One called Water’s Edge and the other A Thousand Summers. Not much has been said on the board about this group that I can find. The ad showed people playing violins, some kind of keyboard, and of course, a whistle. Real lovely, peaceful music. Unfortunately, I only caught the last five minutes of it.
So curiosity has set in: what kind of whistle was that lady playing? It was all black, not shiny. Looked like plastic or some kind of composite perhaps. Went through the Whistle Guide on the C&F site and the closest whistle like it I could see was the picture of a black composite Burke. But not sure that was it either… it was much too early in the morning. Figured someone here might know. Any ideas?

Full moon insomnia? Sometimes, but not last night. It was more like indigestion induced insomnia.
Unfortunatly, it was not on PBS. It was on cable. A paid advertisment where at the end they actually say “the preceeding was a paid advertisment.” Maybe they will play it again sometime. The whistle sounded so beautiful! Of course, it’s not like it would ever sound like that in my hands… but one can dream, right?
My Kildare is all black, and only semi-gloss. Brown is quite common too. I’ve seen Susatos played a lot into mikes on TV and in live performances, and they’re readily available throughout the US, Ireland and the UK. Professionals seem to liek them for their reliability, loudness and in-tune-ness.
I just saw the same thing, and had the same response. The player is Cinnamon Creeden. I can’t find anything to confirm with certainty, but I also think it was a Susato.
Hi all,
Can confirm the whistle was/is a susato. Saw a PBS special
with closeups of the whistle and the T. Janis ensemble has ordered instruments direct from us. The player was IMHO very good at the music she was playing. Very clear and concise. Anybody know who she is?
