Name one favorite totally off the wall pop/rock album

So, what’s your favorite totally off the wall, nobody else owns it or listens to it or ever heard of it pop/rock album?

The Insect Trust - Hoboken Saturday Night

edited to add: http://www.furious.com/perfect/insecttrust.html

Elvis Costello and the Attractions: My Aim Is True.

That’s a favorite of mine as well.

It is very difficult to chose which Elvis Costello LP I like the best, there are so many good ones (like, all of them). I think Spike would be #2.

I think you’ll find that a lot of us own that one.

Comus — First Utterance

Probably the weirdest great rock album ever made.

Honourable mentions:

The Fugs — First
Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band — Trout Mask Replica
Pink Floyd — The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Ted Hawkins — Watch Your Step
Nick Drake— Pink Moon
Robert Wyatt — Rock Bottom
Can — Tago Mago
Girls Together Outrageously — Self Titled (?)

Sundry Roy Harper and Holy Modal Rounders releases.

All of the honourable mentions except Hawkins, Wyatt and perhaps Drake lose points for trying too hard. Hawkins and Wyatt just aren’t weird enough to compete with Comus. Girls Together Outrageously lose points both for trying too hard and for not being weird enough.

Strange and gorgeous aural mystery, April 23, 2007

I’m an unlikely admirer of this record. 51 years old. Taking Lipitor. Bifocals. But, I’ve spent the last two years or so listening to this CD at least once a week. It’s also an unlikely CD to admire. Perfectly reasonable people with refined tastes can be bewildered, even frightened by it. It breaks most of the rules that are supposed to apply to rock music. Brian Eno famously referred to the “vagueness” of the music and that’s dead right. But, all I can say is that it magically finds some system in my brain that I have in common with lizards and plays it like a cheap guitar. It’s wonderful.

Black Label Society: Pride & Glory

Harry Nilsson - The Point

You can review my wierd, off the wall albums anytime!

me too. i’ve been thinking about that album all week.

Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes - Marriage on the Rocks.
It’s actually a very good album.

Small Faces - Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake

That’s not very weird, except for a few goofy segues. Very fine album though. I love ‘Song for a Baker.’

 seemed odd at the time

Stump - A Fierce Pancake

Regatta Da Blanc - 1979 - The Police

At the time, this album was very off the wall, unlike anything else ever done, and in many ways it changed the course of pop/rock music. A huge leap forward from Outlandos D’Amour, which was pretty conventional in many ways.

Could also easily be on the Perfect Album list, along with Zenyatta Mondatta and Ghost in the Machine.

Loren

Hirth Martinez: Big Bright Street

Doesn’t necessarily fit the parameters of Pop/Rock, but it definitely fulfills the ‘Off the Wall’ and ‘favorite’ ones. I love this album!

Big Black: Songs About F*cking.

Freak Out- Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention

Into the Labyrinth- Dead Can Dance

Does it have to be album??

some of us lived in the day of the single!!! dont get me started!
