Name of the black tacky stuff...

Hi All,
What is the name of the black tacky stuff that helps keep uilleann pipe reeds in place?
I bet home depot sells it, but I dont know what the name is.
Thanks,
Wayneo

Do you mean Cobbler’s Wax? It’s wax mixed with pitch. There are various recipes as to how much and what type of wax.

I’m guessing you mean thermowax? I wouldn’t use it to glue a reed into the seat, but some people use it between the staple and heads. I don’t find it all that useful on reeds.

Thermowax=cobbler’s wax=black wax=coad etc. Not available at Home Depot etc. Available from some GHB suppliers. I like to wax the linen thread I use to wrap the end of a drone reed and drone reed thread bridles. Helps them stay in place. Many reed makers like to black wax to wax the thread they use to bind a reed head to the staple. They can seal the binding air-tight with it. I use a black wax/ bee’s wax mixture on the reed seat wrap on double reeds. They don’t fall out.

Thanks for all the great input!
All the best,
Wayneo

I think this is the stuff that was discussed as a good option in the reedmaking workshop I just attended:

Chime in, anyone who remembers more:
