I know that by adding something to the tongue of the reed you can stable it. What is the product and process? Thanks. Cheers.
A bit of poster putty (blu tac) or wax. The amount required should be very small (at most, half the size of a grain of rice).
Also, when you put the drone reed back into the drone, fit it so that the tongue of the reed is on the bottom (in the 6 O’Clock position).
Ok great thanks. How far on the tongue?
Try different positions. Start at least half-way along the tongue and gradually move towards the end.
Thanks PJ for your help. Would bees wax work? No poster tac here at home.
Bees wax would work perfectly fine.
Great thanks. Cheers
If the drone tends to play flatter with an increase in bag pressure, the reed needs to be adjusted so that it plays flatter. You can move the bridle so that the blade is longer or put a weight on the free end of the reed. Using beeswax is the old way, poster putty is the modern way. Anything that will stick on and stay will work. You can adjust the weight forward toward the free end or back towards the bridle a bit to fine tune the reed so that the drone doesn’t change pitch with changes in bag pressure.
If the drone tends to play sharper with an increase in bag pressure, the reed needs to be adjusted so that it plays sharper by 1. shortening the blade by moving the bridle a bit towards the free end or by 2. removing weight from the end of the reed, possibly removing some of your pre-existing weight or by 3. scraping the free end of the reed. Sharpen the reed so that the drone doesn’t change pitch with a change in bag pressure.
Great thanks. Fine tuning now. Odd reed in the tenor drone. Not a tradition looking reed. But it came with set from Ole guessing he made it. Just needs tweaking. Cheers
