What is the remedy here drone is goes woop up in tone on pressure?
Try adjusting the bridle a small bit by very slightly moving it to shorten the tongue.
what would alleviate baritone drone cutting out all the time ?
Giving it a little, and I mean little here, flick open. Too much and that reed will be out of tune for a good while.
Also, lengthening the tongue slightly may do the trick.
Putting a dab of wax on the tongue may do it too.
Whatever you do, do it in moderation, you’ll thank yourself for it. Getting drone reeds to work when they aren’t doing so well can be a long and arduous journey. Have patience. ![]()
Thanx
Will try this shortly.
Hi, I know I’m always banging on about Phragmites reeds but making Drone reeds is quit easy and with plenty of free material to use you will quickly learn a lot about how to make and adjust them.
From your website I assume your somewhere near Brick NJ and there seems to be plenty of wetland and Salt marsh? the Ideal location for your Native Phragmites australis or the European invader.

Here in Florida, there is no shortage of the stuff. It does make good drone reeds and is every bit as hard (if not a little harder) as Arundo. I’ve been meaning to harvest more but gave been focusing on Arundo cane for chanter/regulator reeds.
Mypipes, have you been able to remedy your ‘whooping cane’ issue yet?
I have not had chance to get back at it since my post but I will hunt the marshes…never thought much of it but its all over the place..always seemed to soft …any preference salt verses freshwater??? This should be fun to try any way…thanks all I’ll post later! Phragmites huh???
I have been fiddling around with phragmites for about 2 months now and I am having a heck of a time finding that sweet spot of tongue weight, length, elevation that gives a nice stable reed. I only have 1 of 5 drones reeded with a phragmites reed. The weird thing is it is my tenor drone which has been the most difficult for me to reed quiet and stable.
It would be great if one of the cane drone reed guru’s would post some pictures and some “how to” tips.

The above link is very useful but I use a slightly different technique.
Sufficient wall thickness is very important and in my experience only the first few sections of cane from the root end work well so don’t waste time making narrower reeds from the upper sections of thick reeds as the sides collapse when ligatured.
For the reed to be stable it must have an internal bore not larger than the Drone bore (a bit smaller works fine)
I find threaded rod works really well (the nearer the internal diameter the better) for removing the internal membrane. I find this process works better if the reed has been put in a kettle and brought to the boil first which has the added advantage that it makes the cane les likely to split before the tongue cut has reached the proper depth. Obviously for UPs you must let the reeds dry before adjusting and it’s probably a good idea to rap the reed in thread so that the tong and body shrink together.
I leave 1/4’’ above the node on the opposite side of the cut to act as a “cup” to hold the wax and prevent it from falling off.
The main point is to get lots of cane to experiment with and if after a little tinkering you can’t get one to work make another or make lots to choose between.
All my stuff comes from freshwater, so I too would be interested in the difference.
Good luck
