My New Whistle Stand

I’ve been looking for a whistle stand that would hold all of my whistles. Granted it’s not a lot of whistles, but I have some high and a few low and the only stands I was finding to hold everything was just to expensive. So this weekend, I hit up the hardware store for some PVC pipe of different sizes and some plastic epoxy. $20 later, I had a stand that holds everything! I was planning to paint it, but the weather’s such that I have no desire to go outside to do it. Here it is so far in all of it’s ugly glory

Lol, I rather like that…

Thank you!

That’s not ugly at all. I like how new acquisitions can be added on if the sizes were organized well, which you seem to have done. Black pipes might have been a good option too.

Your stand is neat.

But, frankly, I had more fun checking out your “whistle” collection!

A well-varied bunch!

Mind if I ask what the large wooden tube, in the right rear, IS?

I didn’t think about black pipes. That’s a good idea. There’s also a few empty spaces that need filling…
As for the one on the back right, it’s a bamboo NAF made by a somewhat local forrest ranger. It’s not great, but it’s fun to play around with

I don’t think it is ugly either…yes, black would be perfect…it’s very artistic and shows off each whistle! You could also put a little gold stamp on some of the tubes after you put black on it!

Very innovative!!

Nancy

I think adding a little keyboard and tiny bass foot-pedals in front would make it very cool!

Simple and functional. I like it. I have a whistle hang vs. a stand.

dang Dan’l :astonished:

That’ll learn 'em ta mess with ya

Haha

The good ones (Goldie/Overtons and Reyburns) are up on the shelf in the “socks”.

I’m about to have a ebay giving works fire-sale of all the whistles I rarely use and give 50% to Heifer International. Some nice whistles will go.

Wow, Daniel! That is a very cool idea.

As far as the tiny keyboard and peddles, I may just have to do that. I can be the Phantom of the Dorm

Indeed! And wouldn’t that get you the chicks?

Lol perhaps will get him a chick if he manages to find… a very special lady :stuck_out_tongue:

What a great idea! I built myself a whistle carrier out of PVC into which I put my whistles in their fleece sleeves, but I didn’t know that pipe came in BLACK! Argh…much nicer than this white stuff.

For the benefit of a newbie, would you be willing to say what each of the whistles is? I recognize the Gens on the right (I assume) and a Clarke on the left, but clueless as to the rest.

And I love the little keyboard idea to go with your pipes collection…grin.

If I could find a chick who appreciated an itty bitty pipe organ… Someday

As for the whistles, I’m a newbie myself who has a bad case of WhOA. Plus, board members often post such great deals. Anywho, here’s what’s in there starting at the back
The tallest metal one in the back is a Shaw low D that I bought used. It’s pretty beat up, but it plays well.
The big PVC one is a Jubilee low D “Practice Whistle”
The metal one beside it is a low F that I’ve been told is a Kerry. It looks like pictures of the old style Chieftains.
The black one to the right of the Jubilee is a Dixon polymer Low G.
On the next level down, I have a no-name piccolo that I absolutely can’t play. Next to it is an Ethnic Winds non-tunable copper A. Beside that is a Jerry Freeman tweaked Generation Bb. To the left of that, and only barely visible, is a Waltons Little Black Whistle. The orange one on the far left is a terrible no-name wooden whistle I got from a zoo for $5. Below that are Dixon Trads in D and Eb. To the right of those, I have a whistle from Ecuador in (mostly) D. Behind those, I have my first whistle, a Clarke D, and then a C Woodstock by Clarke (also purchased at the zoo, but on another trip). On the Bottom right, I have a Susato D. And last but not least, I have my favorite whistles: An Eb, D, and C set of Parks Everywhistles. I can play those in the dorm at 3AM or 3 PM. Because of that, they get the most play time. Oh yeah, there’s also a Hohner recorder in there, but I won’t metion it

Hopefully that made some form of sense!

Hey, that’s a pretty cool way to store your whistles Daniel.

About the PVC ones, nicelo done too, simple and effective!

Don’t use black. All the dust will collect on the top of the tubes and it will look awful. Mind you, to dust it you would have to take all the whistles out and play them before you put them back. Could work out well.

I’ve made a couple of whistle stands. I decided that I wanted something that could fold up, and would have the whistles (and recorders too. So sue me.) at the right height for both sitting and standing jams and performances. I made my 1st prototype when I just started playing with others (about 12 years ago). After a lot of other people said they liked it, I bought a table saw and router table to go into small scale production. I made about 6, and sold most of them over the next few years.

After that, not much happened until a couple of years ago when I accidentally broke one of the legs and couldn’t use it until I made a new leg. I happened to have a 6 pack of Guinness beer, so I stuck the whistles in it. The six pack was too floppy, so I designed a plywood insert to fit in the outside cardboard. There are various holes and pegs to hold the different instruments. I made sure that one of the compartments was large enough to hold a real bottle of Guinness! This stand is a big hit when we give performances.

The fold up stand can hold 5 whistles and recorders, while the Guinness stand (as currently set up) can hold 11.

(Sorry about the small size. I’m still figuring out how to post photos.)

You guys are all very creative? I don’t think the beer one though would be a hit at church. Maybe I will try to make the pvc one at home with black pipe. I like to keep my whistles out and handy so I will play more but I do not have a drill press to make a stand with dowels. At church I have one of the Susato dowel stands C-clamped to a table and that has worked very well for me there but it was pretty pricey and does not fit the big low whistles all that great. They can look a little cock-eyed on it. I have thought a lot about it so thanks for the ideas.
