Microphone Stand Whistle Holder

Who has a better idea?

I’m looking for an easy way to hold several whistles while performing on stage. So far, the easiest creation has been a microphone stand cup holder with a tall water bottle in it along with a sleeve protector made for a piece of paper, and two rubberbands. This can hold 5 whistles. The picture makes them look tightly packed, but they are actually loose and easy to retrieve.

The picture shows a:
Low D
Low G
Alto A
D

Who has a better idea? Is anyone up for a little brainstorming?

Plastic water bottle stops at the black electricians tape, the paper sleeve protector rises above that.

I saw Neil Anderson put his whistles on a music stand. He put the top of the stand parallel to the stage and unrolled his whistle pouch on it.

Then, since it was a cold, wet, outdoor venue, he put a heating pad on top of them.

Pretty slick.

If you’re on facebook you can go to the rathkeltair page and there are a ton of photos, some of which you can see the stand.

Great idea!

I have thought about buying a hot water bottle to keep the whistles warm too.

A drumstick holder works in the same basic configuration as the cup holder, without the need for modifications. I use a Vater, which clamps very securely to the stand and can be conveniently angled. The bottom is foam lined, and the inside can be ringed with felt for extra protection. Easily holds 4-6 whistles of various sizes. Also works as a flute stand if placed lower down.

When played separately with a stick, the Vater also has a great cowbell sound!

“I use a Vater”

Another Great idea. Thanks MTGuru

Have you used the Vater for holding a Low D? It looks like it might be only 5 or 6 inches deep.

It’s 7 inches … On a low D, it comes up to about the #4 hole (F#) and seems quite stable. I’ve usually used it for smaller whistles on stage. But here’s my Tipple D flute in the Vater, to give you the idea.

That looks great ! I checked the price, and it’s even affordable. Thanks MTGuru.

You’re welcome, Greg. Yes, I think I paid only around $10 for it at Guitar Center a few years ago.

My only quibble with the Vater is that the angle adjustment is only in the plane of the stand (i.e., away from the stand). So if you want it angled toward you, you have do mount it directly in front of you, which may feel like it’s in the way. So I usually just clamp it to the side of the stand and leave it vertical, which is basically fine.

I have a pair of whistling trousers that are ideal (deep pockets just above the knees).

Does that mean you’d be willing to come and stand next to me the next time I need a whistle holder on stage? You might have some explaining to do when I reach into your trousers … :astonished:

Keeps 'em warm too

Thanks hoopy mike, I like that idea of keeping the whistles convenient and at the same time… warm. Watch out for MTGuru! I think that MT is looking for a way to keep his hands warm too. You might get a surprise when you reach in your pocket.

Eurika! I think I got it.

Made with simple materials bought at a craft store, and very sturdy. Picture show 4 whistles and a glass flute with room for more.

I like it, Greg. Very creative.

Thanks for the comment MT. I’m pleased with the result.

The whistles are stable and secure as well as accessible.

Thanks for yours and everyone’s input.

I am on a similar quest. I need a whistle holder that will hold many more whistles than a vader or cup so I am planning on one made out of pvc pipes, in a bunch and clamped on with a device used to attach personal monitors to the mike stands. I am making the bottom of it out of polymer clay which is just raw pvc before baking but have to wait to get the clamp in before I can form the pvc base to fit it. I usually sit and play at a table or piano but would like to clear the clutter and having your whistles sitting on the keys is not ideal. I will keep you posted.
