My new pipes -- how to

Hey, I just got a practice set of pipes. And trying to set it up.

I think I got the chanter/reed done ok. When I blow into the brass end it sounds fine.

There seems to be a problem with the brass end from the chanter fitting into the bag. It doesn’t seem to fit in fully, it isn’t airtight.

Am I missing a component or something?

Cheers

I don’t think you want to blow into the chanter with your mouth. Not a good idea for any length of time, anyway. But I’m no expert.

Hmm, who made your pipes?

Btw., it truly isn’t a good idea, it can ruin your reed.

It’s a practice set from Pat Sky. Maybe I broke it ?

Is the brass tube meant to fully cover the hole of the entrance to the bag, or is there some stopper I need?

A picture tells a thousand words.

Put some hemp, sewing thread or PTFE (teflon tape) around the brass tube until it fits snugly into the bag.

Thats great, thanks a million!

Never been a huge fan of the teflon tape. Tried it for a while but didn’t like it, perhaps with the exception of the drone slides. Waxed hemp is good but I’ve found that dental floss is quite handy. Any flavour will do - i don’t think it makes too much difference

Ok I tried using sewing thread, and it fits nicely, then when I push on the bellows, it doesn’t seem to be working. I just hear air coming through the pipe and it makes no sound.

I must be dense or something!

BTW the reed is in the chanter :stuck_out_tongue:

Try to close all the holes and blow - so you can see if there isn’t any leak elsewhere.

And as silly as it may sound, did you try to increase the pressure? If the reed is too hard, it may need some noticeable pressure. Also, there can be something wrong with the reed. If you have time, and those other things don’t work, could you post photos of the reed?

I’ll need to read the manual that came with it. I thought the reed was pretty much plug-and-play.

Haha!

Aindriu, where are you located, and what is your climate there - wet/dry, hot/cold?

(You can fill in your Location profile to tell us where you are.)

If you’re in Ireland, I’m sure there are a few other pipers around who can check it out for you.
