Earlier this year, I got a special (to me) Busman D whistle made from Ironwood (aka Hop Hornbeam), which I mentioned in a thread here: http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=25603. Well, as wonderful as that whistle is, I just wasn’t satisfied… I had to have a C whistle in the same wood. The C arrived yesterday, and I must say I’m thrilled.
Here’s a quick picture of my Busman dynamic duo:
The C is every bit a Busman whistle: excellent craftsmanship, wonderful sound, beautiful to see, feels good in the hand. As for how it compares to the D, Paul summed it up best in an email (and I don’t think he’ll mind me quoting it here):
I’ve only played the C for a total of about 30 minutes so far (still in the acclimation period), but Paul’s description is very accurate; it’s “somewhat softer and less assertive” than the D, but is still an exceptional whistle.
While practising with the C whistle tonight, I played “The Parting Glass” in honor of Glenn Schultz (may he rest in peace), Paul’s whistle-making mentor. It sounded particulary mournful, partly due to the slightly lower key, partly due to the room acoustics, and partly due to my mood. It just seemed appropriate.
I just got one too! Mine’s imbuia(I hope I spelled that right!), also known as African walnut. It’s really beautiful, it’s got these cool squiggles in the grain. I haven’t played it a lot yet, breaking it in and all, but it does sound wonderful. It’s in tune with the slide pretty far out, a little more than halfway. A lot farther than the D I have. So that just surprised me for a minute, but I’ve gotten used to it. Anyway, lovely whistle!
Yes, but it’ll take a few days, probably. I’ll get on it as soon as I can, but I’ll be very busy all day for the next two days. Maybe Monday? I’ll do my best.
Heh heh. Once I started taking photos, I found I couldn’t stop! Here are a few… http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kellydebutts/album?.dir=/b2b9&.view=t
I have lots more, some are rather artistic, I think. The computer was having trouble uploading them though, so maybe another time. You get the idea from these anyway! Isn’t it beautiful?
