Just for fun, I’ve put up a page with .mp3 files I recorded of several flutes and whistles in my collection, all playing the same tune, “Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel”.
They include:
Flutes:
Hamilton Keyless Blackwood
Antique 1857 Metzler 8-Key Cocuswood
M&E Rudall and Rose Keyless in Delrin
Aulos Plastic Baroque One-Key
Doug Tipple’s Irish PVC Flute from eBay (not bad for $35.00)
Thank you!!! I hear all sorts of things on all sorts of whistles designed to aid in the comparison of different whistles…like “Lets compare brand A to brand B. Here we have brand A playing “Coach Road to Sligo” at 323 bpm and brand B playing “Danny Boy” at 12 bpm. See the difference?” Well Duhhhh…lets compare apples to oranges music-wise.
Thank you Michael for using the same friggin song to compare whistles with!!! Finally I have something to go by. Granted that different players will sound better/worse on different whistles…but you seem to be an accomplished musician that has spent time with all of the whistles represented…(read as: Rippin’!!!)

As soon as I get home from work (yeah, I’m “working” right now), I’ll have a link on Clips to Michael’s site so you can locate it later. After I make some coffee and chill out, anyway. Oh, and try out my new whistle. Patience.

Wow, Michael, great clips. Someday I hope to be half that good. The sound of the Burke blew me away! That was by far my favorite. Thanks for doing all those clips of the same song, different whistles, so I could get a good idea what they sound like (owning a few “cheapies” only myself). And that tune is now permanently implanted in my brain!
I’ve added my recently acquired Healy Piccolo in D to the flute/whistle comparison site, if anyone is interested. This is the one that was listed on the board a few days ago.
I’ve been wanting to do this same thing, but I still haven’t gotten around to creating a web page, or setting up my recording equipment for that matter. It would actually complement Michael’s – not only is there almost no overlap in our collections, I can’t play anywhere near as well as he.
