MAN! What can I say. There is a neat little coffee house down in Mandarin here in Jacksonville and tonight, yours truly-the Tradman- got to play his first public performance.
Alas, it didnt go off without a few mistakes here and there, but it did go off!
The general rule for this open-mic session of folk-type atmosphere (anything goes…) is 3 songs or 10 minutes.
My lineup was: ‘The Last Pint’ on my Chieftain Low F
then… 'Inion Ni Scannlain (Low F)
‘Teehans’ (Chieftain Low D) transitioned into “Her long black hair”
and then an original “Rolling Down the Lane” on my Sindt Hi ‘D’
Tons of fun, and this is to encourage everyone here who is wanting to play, but can find a ‘real’ Irish Session. Just do it. People loved it (the guy even made me a recording on tape and gave it to me) and I have to say-it was well worth the time!
Very, very cool! Was the tape painful to listen to, or were you pleasantly surprised? This disclaimer: I haven’t heard your playing, just going on what usually happens in art. So I’m not being subtle.
Well, actually I guess I should have mentioned that this isnt my first time playing out in public, just the first time playing my whistles out in public. It was most awesome though!
I have played guitar for about 12 years now and over that time I have actually played in front of hundreds of people (actually the largest crowd was about 1400 people one day!) and so, yeah, it is exillirating, but even more so playing Irish whistle!
What can I say? I also recently did a performance (first time in life, first solo, first with whistle - wowing even myself!) with a low whistle, in a my country which pretty much lacks whistle love.
The satisfaction and the thirst for more of it - aahhh…
When he came home and called me about it, I was jealous. I knew that he was going to go and play, but I am really proud of him. Next time I want to go… the only thing is getting down there (an hour and a half) and playing and getting back up here. O well, my day will come soon enough!!
Congratulations!! Isn’t performing a blast!!! Before I perform, I always wonder “why on earth am I doing it” then once I start playing I begin to relax and then it is such a high. I love it! In about three weeks I’m doing a classical piano recital… but inserting about 15 min of traditional music (including whistles!) at the end… I am SOOO excited!!
ANyways, way to go!!! That is exciting!
