My favorite quote of that type goes something like: “The visual arts are meant to suspend time, where music is meant to move time forward.” Or something like that. It was better in the original wording.
A couple of days ago I heard an interview with a violinist who was a student of Jasha Heifetz. He said he told him one time- " practice as if everything depends on it, perform as if it doesn’t matter.
“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic
hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.
There’s also a negative side.”
“Life’s little highway has its ups and downs
You will laugh and then you will cry
But whenever some bad weather brings you down
Just climb on your music and fly” – Michael Franks
Yeah…that feelings quote is a good simple summation.
For sure I’ve listened to instrumental passages, and heard/felt them as distinctly as if someone where saying something meaningful verbally. The music may be every bit as clear a message…but try explaining why verbally. It can’t be done.
