Music Software?

I’ve searched the forums and either this isn’t anywhere to be found yet or I am not searching with the right words, so I’ll start a post on this…

I have a program called Tabit, from Tabit.net that you can write guitar tablature to and the program will play it back in midi format.

Is there anything that does this with standard music notation?

Thanks

Do you mean: write in standard notation and get midi back? I think Steinberg and stuff like that do this sort of thing. If you have big bucks, go for Sibelius or similar. Actually, there are quite a few music packages available to do this. Just Google the string “notation midi software” and you’ll come up with all sorts of free and commercial offerings. Explore!

Tabledit will play back from SMN too - but you may need to choose a different instrument other than guitar. I’ve not used it in many years, and not for guitar (used it for dulcimer), but you could input the TAB number or the SMN note. I do remember for dulcimer it would play back one octave “off” from the SMN notes and you had to go in and force it into the correct octave.
For a “free” (or cheap) program, Tabledit is ok. It has a lot of problems with things such as pick up notes and forcing accidentals. And trying to add lyrics is really difficult.

Tom uses MusicEase. He uses Sibelius for looking at midi files, but not for composition. If you want to see what MusicEase looks like in print, the TABS on our website were made with it.

Finale does a free version called notepad which does Guitar tab as well as formal music notation. I don’t use the tab, but I’m very happy with the Notepad. It suits my needs. There are more elaborate versions of Finale which cost money.

If I need to produce more complicated sheet-music I format it myself in CorelDraw. No playback, but I generally know what it sounds like if I’ve got to that stage.

Many abc programs will do this, too. I know Barfly does.

Noteworthy Composer is what I use. I think a license is around $40, and many online music sites provide Noteworthy files.

It can also import a midi and produce sheet music (though it’s nasty if the arrangement is very complex.

Thanks for all the information. Looks like I got a lot of good things to look into.

You should do a search for music software on this forum. I posted a similar topic a month or so ago. There were a number of links to free online resources.
