Whistle Tablature Software?

I know this has been bashed around a bit in the past, but I can’t seem to find what I’m looking for in the archives.

Anyone know of a Windows program that will import an ABC or MIDI file and produce both standard notation and whistle tablature as an output? You can find programs that do one or the other, but I can’t turn up anything that does both. An output similar to the stuff produced under ‘whistle tablature’ at the “Yet Another Digital Tradition Page”, http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/, by their experimenatal tab progam is what I am seeking.

Along this line, back in August 2001, StewySmoot posted a somewhat cryptic message in a similar thread that stated “and while I am at it… The Whistle font freeware to create your own tablature makes life easier!”
If you are still around Mr. Smoot, to what were you referring? Ring a bell with anyone else?

I’ve looked a little at TablEdit, but I find that to be one confusing program. Hard to tell if it would be worth the trouble to learn. Even though they claim a whistle tab output, it is of course predominately a guitar-oriented program.

Pointers in any direction would be most appreciated.

Follow up question:

Is Rick (I presume) of http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/ a member of this forum? There is no e-mail for him at the /dtrad/ site, and I would like to get in contact with him for a quick question regarding availability of the experimental tab program.

CDon, try this…http://www.sharewaredirect.co.uk/

Thanks Anna… I have this particular program, but it prints only tablature. It certainly does a good job of that. However, at the moment I am looking for something that prints standard notation with the tablature under the notes.

Take care…

Thanks for the link, Anna! That software works great for me.

I’m afraid I cannot agree that TablEdit is one confusing program.

I am mainly a guitarist but I was the one who persuaded the TablEdit author (Matthieu Leschemelle) to add support for whistle tablature to the TablEdit program and I find the program amazingly simple to use.

One of the major areas where TablEdit wins out is the manner in which the author is willing to take on board suggestions for improvements and additions. So, if you play whstle please become a user; help to build the library of whistle transcriptions AND, most importantly, let Matthieu know of any alterations you want or feel are needed to the whistle tab area of the program.

Many thanks.

Cheers and keep on tootin’.

P.S.: TablEdit will produce both notation and tablature. It will play the tunes back via midi. It has a practice function which starts the tune slowly and increases speed by a user set amount on each repetition up to a specified performance speed.

It has versions available for PC (Windows), MAC and Pocket PC and will also run on Linux under WINE.

It will import ABC, MIDI, NIFF, Wayne Cripps, ASCII Tab, Bucket O’Tab, Tabestry, TabRite, and Tef files. And, there is a stand-alone module for registered users which will convert PowerTab and Guitar Pro tab files to TablEdit.

It will export tunes as: Midi, ASCII tab, HTML, RTF, ABC and Wav files.

Cheers
