Music on "Copper" - TV show on BBC America

Lots of great music to be had on this series! I was curious if anyone knows who played the whistle solo toward the end - it sure sounded like Joannie Madden to me… Couldn’t find it in the credits (they went by too fast) or online.

Pat

Thanks for the alert, Pat. I wasn’t aware of this show. I don’t watch much TV, but it seems that every time I check BBCA they’re showing bad SciFi or Top Gear.

It hasn’t aired here yet (about 15 minutes now). So I’ll watch and record it, and check the credits.

IMDB says the music is by composer Brian Keane. So that may be a clue to track down the soundtrack musicians.

I like Franka Potente (Lola!).

You have a good ear, Pat.

Brian scored the series and the title music employing top Irish musicians Joanie Madden and Eileen Ivers among others.

Not such a great ear, really, I just listen to “Songs of the Irish Whistle” - a LOT! I highly recommend the series (“Copper”) for all kinds of reasons, not just the music, btw…

I did ask Joanie on FaceBook, but haven’t heard back from her yet, so thanks!

Pat

I just did a Google search to try and find out who played the lovely whistle tune at the end of ‘Copper’, and the first result was this thread… I should have known to come here first! :tomato:
Now I just wonder where can I find a full length recording of the tune.

The tune is called “The Last Rose of Summer” - you might be able to google it - although I couldn’t find a whistle version doing this.

Pat

Here’s another possible clue.

Pat, give a listen to the background of this video. Start at 12:54 into the clip. Is that it?

It continues into this clip.

Re Feadoggie’s ‘here’s another clue’ - 'track 9 ‘The last rose of summer’ - Joanie Madden and the New York Orchestra

That tune on those videos is ‘Bold Fenian Men’ - I grew up on that one.

Correction to my earlier post - I couldn’t find a version with Joanie playing the tune. I DO know what it sounds like and nobody (and I do mean nobody) plays whistle as well as Joanie! This is, of course, MHO!

Pat

As a newbie whistler, I just want to thank everyone that has posted here. Wow! What an incredible life-lesson, the “Copper” series, the music, and you all! Thank you, sincerely.

ok, Brian Keane produced Joanie Madden’s Song of the Irsh Whistle CD. Right? They have a long history with each other.

Brian Keane also produced the music for the Ken Biurns PBS series on New York. The soundtrack for the series lists one track on which Joanie Madden played (with the New York Orchestra) titled coincidentally “The Last Rose of Summer” There you have a recording by Joanie and Brian Keane.

It may not be the same mix that is used in Copper but it is mot unusual when recording for a soundtrack to remix and re-use bits in other projects. So who knows?

Resurrecting the thread…

Heard back from Joanie and she confirmed that it is definitely her on “Copper” she also added the following (for those of you not on Facebook):

“I’m heading into the studio this week in ireland to play whistles on another episode of the BBC America Series called “Copper”, which is based on an Irish cop in the 1860’s in New York. My good friend Brian Keane is writing the music and I’m performing along with Eileen Ivers on fiddle, Jerry O’Sullivan on pipes and Anna Colliton on bodhran. Over 2 million people are tuning in weekly, and it’s launched to the biggest viewership in BBC history. It’s a pleasure to work along Academy Award Director Barry Levinson.”

I love this show (and Joanie’s playing, obviously)!

Pat

I tuned in to hear Joanie and couldn’t stop watching the show.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to let you know that we are giving the “Copper” soundtrack a formal release! With music by Brian Keane, it runs almost 70 minutes and features all those greats that you had mentioned before including Joanie Madden, Eileen Ivers, Jerry O’Sullivan, and Eric Weissberg.

We just posted a video on YouTube featuring the opening theme at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_AzNUPZQeE.

The album is available now (along with Joanie Madden’s solo records) direct from our website as well as iTunes and soon to Amazon:

Thank you for all the kind words!

Welcome to the whistle forum.

I’ve been curious about whether John Whelan (button accordion) music will be used during the series?

I’m glad you specified John the 'cordeen player and not John Whelan the 5-string banjo player.

Best wishes.

Steve

banjo on my knee… ta da!

John did mention that he was doing some recording for the series whether it gets used or not or edited out who knows. :boggle:

I’d listen to John playing the spoons or just about anything.

He’ll be at the New Bedford (MA) Folk Festival in early July. (Presumably to demonstrate his new accent.) It’s not that far…

Best wishes.

Steve

Yes, I knew about New Bedford, MA gig and they have quite a line up of musicians… but, better yet, John Whelan is returning here to play the Fairfield festival June 14-16th. So there will be some mighty sessions locally.
