This may be old news for ya’ll, and if so I apologize, but I saw the new Celtic Women; The New Journey concert on PBS last night: Oh, yeah!
And the whistler/piper got some camera on him as well as he accompanied the singing. Does anyone know who he is? And what whistles was he playing? I saw a really long one, looked like a low D that was translucent(?). Another silver one looked like it had keys(?). A third was shorter, perhaps a C or a D, and was black with a silver space where tuning ring would be. An Abell?
Just curiousity. He was really good, I know that!
I saw the concert the other night also. I hope the neighbors enjoyed how loud I had the stereo! The smaller whistle he played looked a lot like a Susato because of the lip at the end. In the first concert it didn’t have the ring at the head joint, so I suspect the non black color may have been teflon tape. I have no idea what his low whistles were, but he sure made them sound good.
I also saw the PBS concert last night.
The piper is John O’Brien, brother of Mick O’Brien (May Morning Dew CD).
He has been playing with the Celtic Woman tour for over a year at least as I saw, and spoke with, him last November in San Francisco during the concert break.
He is a fine piper and whistle player for sure!
It was nice to see them actually spend some camera time on him for once instead of the cheesey audience shots.

What drives me mad watching the show is that it looks like all the “Celtic Women” are all lip-syncing. I know they probably aren’t, but it sure looks like they are. And that fiddle player is a little too perky for my tastes!

I saw the Celtic Women concert last year in San Francisco. They are not lip- syncing. They have beautiful angelic voices for sure. I was sitting close enough to be able to tell.
Reminds me of what it means to use your voice as an instrument. After all, aren’t all instruments trying to mimic the human voice?
The production and sound of the live show are truly amazing. Worth seeing if you get a chance.

My voice kinda sounds like a banjo.
I don’t know why but they play Celtic Women it seems like 7 times a week here in Greeley on our public chanel… Craziness. They are very polished… Not the sound that attracted me to trad but anything that promotes Irish music & “culture” to the masses is great… Why not share the love… Hopefully CW will serve as a gateway drug to the “harder” stuff!

But the music’s not Irish enough for that.
