I was daydreaming recently trying to think about unusual materials that you might be able to make a whistle out of and after a while, industrial synthetic sapphire came to mind.
After a long websearch, I found this company in India that says they can make any shape you want out of sapphire, ruby, zircon, etc… So, when I saw that other thread turn to the subject of mount materials I thought about the jewels. While it might be cost-prohibitive, it is nonetheless a fascinating idea.
I guess they grow the crystals and then mill them to precision based on your specs.

Hey Paul…I thought you were an automobile economy engineer!! What’s with this fascination with jewels!!! I can understand Marc’s, being a jewler and all.
I actually had a crystal flute several years ago. It was a D flute, same pitch as my Rudall & Rose, but much darker and softer sounding than wood. It’s density would be greater than a sterling flute, which is fairly bright…I don’t get it. There’s obviously more to tone than material…

Tis true, Larry! although I have absolutely no life outside of work, My mind tends to wander sometimes. I sent an email out to that company to see if it would be possible to make one and how much. I’ll post what they say here. I’ll bet it would sound good.
Remeber the “clear plastic” craze of the 80’s? When you could buy clear plastic phones, radios, computers etc. (just so you could go ooh and ahh at their innards!)
Imagine a set of pipes out of a clear material…funky eh? Heh…or at least a mainstock out of some clear plstic…hmmm..actually..that might be kinda cool..yeah..and you could hook up some non lights or some sort of optical fibers or…er..ahh..sorry!
Blast! someone else had my idea for clear pipes. Could be nice to watch how your reeds vibrate. Then again, the gremlins living in my pipes might get angry at having their privacy invaded. I’ll have to sick the pooka on them eventually.
