That’s a very sweet and responsive little tooter you’ve produced, Jerry. Very nice clips.
BTW, I have a Jerry-tweaked Walton’s C as part of a Generation set. That’s a whistle I like very much and play a lot.
Just as a matter of interest for those of us who don’t have any untweaked Waltons, how would you compare the sound of the untweaked D to the one we hear on those clips, Jerry? Anyone else have an opinion?
The main difference between a stock Waltons Mellow D and a tweaked Mellow Dog is that the stock Mellow D has a huskier voicing. The tweaked Mellow Dog is a purer/sweeter voicing. (And I’ve corrected the sharp bell note on the Mellow D tube.)
I started with a tweaked Mellow D, using the stock Waltons Mellow D (which is actually their stock C) whistlehead.
Then, when I went into production with them, I found that the plastic casting was inconsistant in a crucial spot and I couldn’t get predictable results. At that point, I had already introduced the product, and I was in a bind.
After wracking my brain, it occurrred to me that I could use a tweaked Feadog C whistlehead instead of the troublesome Waltons whistleheads. Experimenting with a Feadog C whistlehead, I found that the voicing came out cleaner, purer, sweeter with the Feadog C whistlehead than even with a perfect Waltons Mellow D whistlehead, and the tweaked “Mellow Dog” came into being.
In the meantime, several vendors mentioned to me that they had to replace many Mellow D whistles recently because of quality control problems. Now, however, the quality problem has been solved, and Waltons Mellow D whistleheads are very consistant and reliable again. The problem only existed for a few weeks, just at the right time to mess up my plans.
But guess what? If there hadn’t been a run of dodgy Waltons whistleheads, I never would have had to switch to Feadog whistleheads and turn the tweaked Mellow D into the tweaked Mellow Dog. The result is that it’s even a little better than it would have been if there had been no problem to begin with.
I have a question for you guys, I’m a newbe to the whistle. While kind of, I’ve been messing around with them for about a year now and I have a box full of whistles that in my opinion are crap. Walton’s, Generations, Clarkes, I think I have somewhere around a dozen whistles and the only one I have that sonds good (in lower & upper registers) is a Clarke Meg D, and one Clarke oreginal D that almost plays good untill you get into the higher notes in the upper register.
How do I go about making them sound like the one in your sound clips, or where can I get a whistle that sounds like that?
The political incorrect answer is probably that it’s not the whistles that are crap but that you need a lot of learning and practice. Back to the grindstone in other words. Don’t worry though, if you put in the time and work it will come together.
There are a lot of tips on tweaking the various model of whistlles right here on the the boards. Just do a search of some of the past posts for the particular whistle that you want to improve.
You could also go to Ebay , do a search for “Freeman” under “musical instruments” or “woodwind” and checkout some of the one’s that Jerry has tweaked himself. He generally has several up on Ebay , at any given time. He’s the master of tweakology !! IMO Hope that helps .
You can also order from me directly, or from any of several online whistle retailers. Send me a PM if you need ordering information.
FWIW, I stand behind all my whistles 100% at all times. If you want to find out how one of my whistles plays, order one. If it doesn’t suit you, I’ll take it back and refund your money. Not a problem at all.
I’m not often in agreement with Peter, but on this one I will be…
do get a Freeman Tweeked Mellow Dog, as it is not that expensive at all and is really nice. It will give you some advantage by not letting you question the quality of the sound of the whistle itself.
Practice, practice, practice… you will amazed at how much better many whistles seem to be after the player actually knows what they are doing. (and I would wager heavily that each and ever yone of us had to learn that - most of us the hard way )
some whistles are crap. No real argument… it’s just getting to where you can say it with some educated authority rather than just some conviction.
Thank you everybody for all the kind words. And yes anniemcu I plan on getting me a Freeman Tweeked Mellow Dog from Mr. Freeman. I know there not expensive but I’m on a fixed income from SS disability so it may have to wait for a check or two before I do get one. But I will.
I also understand that one needs to practice a lot to get a whistle to do what its supposed to do. I learned that from teaching myself to play a harmonica. And I have no troubles (well not much anyway) getting the upper registers to play. The reason I said they where crap is because of the volume between the lower and upper register. My Clarke Megs, both the C & D play just fine. But the others in the upper register in order to get a good clean note the volume so so much higher then the lower register it makes the song sound bad. Maybe its just me, I’ll know when I get my Freeman Tweeked Mellow Dog.
I am a newbie as well. I have about 2 1/2 months in this wonderful hobby now.
BY ALL MEANS - get a Freeman tweaked whistle. I got a Freeman tweaked Generation in D and finally my whistle playing started to “fall in place”. I just got a Generation C from Jerry - another winner. I’m planning on getting a Mellow Dog from him too. You will be amazed how his magic helps make these whistles playable. And such a reasonable investment.
Good luck!
And as the others have said - practice a lot!
They are selling on Ebay for $ 36.50 + $ 3.85 S&H = $ 40.35 Not sure about anywhere else , but , for such a tuneful bit of Freeman magic , that’s a pretty good deal! IMO
I listened to the recordings you posted and I would really like to know how you have your reverb/echo settings. Did you record these on your computer? I use the Goldwave recorder software and would really like to get my reverb/echo setting like you have on your recordings. Thanks in advance for you help.
