modern dance

I watched a modern dance performance tonight. For an hour and a half, about 30 people did different performances. One was a Russian classmate of mine who is a classically trained ballerina. She basically flew through the air like a butterfly. It was so wonderful.

And one dance featured only four gay men basically making out through dance, and one included older people as well as children. It was so inspiring and fun to watch. I never knew I would like modern dance so much. It makes me wish I could dance. Are there any dancers on C&F? (Just curious…)

that baby is too cute. but i dont like modern dance, too weird for my taste, or not weird enough i guess would be the right way. :stuck_out_tongue:

i totally agree on the baby! Just so darned cute and the absolute epitomy of joy! I love it!

Now… I like modern dance… mostly… Almost charades at times, can be deeply emotional, funny, scarey, loving… pretty darned interesting stuff… some of it is even too far out there for me, but I like a great deal of it.

that is just the happiest little baby ever. it just makes me happy looking at that smile.

Just a clod-hopper. Ceilidh-dancing. An Innocent Bystander of Morris Dance.

I like watching ballet, though. When I say that, some people assume that I’m gay. That amuses me a little. Modern Dance… …not so much. Once upon a time I went out with a woman who was keen on modern dance and perhaps that soured me against it. She was THE most pretentious, self-obsessed… grumble mumble sugga rassa frassa ungsheck.

I was once co-opted into the Haddenham Hoofers when they were adding atmosphere to a barn-theatre production of something like “Lark Rise to Candleford”. They wanted extra bodies for set dancing outside the Barn. We were dressed as 19th Century Rustics. Darlings, we were wonderful!

I wish I could dance properly. Not ballet or anything clever… just ordinary dancing.

And, yeah, the baby is cute.

“properly”?!?!?!?!?

— blimey Buddhu ---- talk about asking for the moon…

For some reason this brought to mind the interpretive dance bit they did on Red Dwarf, series V, in the episode “Demons and Angels.”

Babies are just cute in general…that’s why I have so many

As for dancing, I don’t…unless of course I’m working. Then I put something on that’s great to dance to and dance while I mop the floor, cook dinner, or wash dishes.

Doesn’t everyone? When my daughter was nine, I was working in the kitchen and dancing to my CD of Oriental Dance Music (Ras Sharki). When I looked around, my daughter and her friend were standing in the doorway with suppressed grins and eyes as big as saucers…

At present just Morris.

Over the years, various Ballroom and Latin American dances, 40s Jive, Salsa, Irish Set and English and Scottish Country dancing.

My sister-in-law is a dancer, so I see some pretty interesting
amateur dance occasionally. It can be really interesting. Depends
on the choreography.

Wow, that could be overkill… although,
I went to Zoomanity in Las Vegas. It is a Cirque du Soleil show
with lots of dancing and acrobatics (and some nudity, as the theme
is sexuality). They did a piece where two guys were fighting in a
cage with other male dancers hanging on the top of the cage,
cheering them on. To the “suprise and consternation” of the guys
watching the fight, the two men’s grappling began to resemble
embracing. Then, it became a full out hug and a passionate kiss.
It was really powerful. Kind of a “make love not war” thing.

“properly” = not falling over, not crashing into people, not having to stop to wonder what the ferk I’m doing, not moving in a totally different rhythm to the music, not looking too much more of a knobhead than the other dancers.

For me, that would be dancing properly. I don’t want to be Nijinsky or owt.

Well, to be fair, it was not really “making out.” They were picking each other up and bending over each other and grabbing each others arms and spinning one another around. And one of the guys (out of three) may not be gay, I only know 3 of them personally, but I’m pretty sure the fourth is a homo, too. (Straight men can’t dance. Kidding, Martin (and Beth), Kidding!)

 Mine have gotten over that…I’ll dance to just about anything. It makes things go better, and brings my mood up if it’s down. But when I’m feeling especially rebellious, I’ll dance around to Green Day (much to the chagrin of Mr Izz  ).

When I clean I listen to trance music, or dance remixes of my favorite songs. Ace of Base is fun to clean to.

Let’s see- as a kid, and later as an adult, I took ballet(great exercise)- not much good but it sure gives a great appreciation of those who can do it.

Flatfootin’ - I grew up with that.
Tap- that’s just plain fun-but I remember very little.
Clogging- even more fun. I’ve got clog taps epoxied onto a pair of black high top sneakers. Once I confess, I sent a tap flying across the room when it’s glue gave way.
I know a bit of ballroom dancing.
My dad taught me to jitterbug.
I always wanted to learn step dancing but never could find anyone to teach me. I did learn a Canadian waltz clog once.

I’ve always danced. I love to dance and will be on the floor in a minute given the opportunity.

I have no idea what trance music is…it makes me think of zombies or something  I just like something really upbeat and “danceable”. My tastes really vary in this area (in terms of what is good music to clean to or not). I can see where Ace of Base might be a good choice

Do headbanging or moshing count?

It’s a subset of electronic dance music.
It uses repetitious rhythms that remind me of shamanistic drumming.
